Coolant Temperature Gauge: Sonata

NOTE: There are 3 instrument cluster 16-pin harness connectors. Connector I21-1 is located on driver's side of instrument cluster. Connector I21-2 is located in middle of instrument cluster. Connector I21-3 is located on passenger's side of instrument cluster.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. Using a fused jumper wire set, connect battery voltage to instrument cluster connector I21-1 terminal No. 13 and ground to connector I21-1 terminal No. 1. Connect a variable resistance to instrument cluster connector I21-1 terminals No. 1 and No. 12.
  2. Slowly change the variable resistance while monitoring the temperature gauge needle. As the resistance changes the needle position should also change. See COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE TEST (SONATA)  table. Replace coolant temperature gauge if needle does not move to specified position.
COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE TEST (SONATA)

Resistance (Ohms) (1) (2) Gauge Needle Position
157.0 -40 Degrees
24.0-48.4 -5 To -10 Degrees
15.2 26-37 Degrees
(1) Variable resistance setting.
(2) Gauge needle position above or below level position. Coolant temperature sending unit resistance varies from about 157 ohms at 131°F (55°C) to 24 ohms at 230°F (110°C).
