Fuel Gauge: Sonata

NOTE: There are 3 Instrument cluster 16-pin harness connectors. Connector I21-1 is located on driver's side of instrument cluster. Connector I21-2 is located in the middle of the instrument cluster. Connector I21-3 is located on passenger's side of instrument cluster.
  1. Inspect fuel gauge for movement from "E" empty position to "F" full position and then to "E" empty position. Fuel gauge indication must be read within 7 minutes of applying resistance and battery voltage to gauge. Needle must stabilize within 9 degrees of specified position. Apply battery voltage for 10 minutes. Then disconnect battery voltage for 30 minutes and read needle position.
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. Using a fused jumper wire set, connect battery voltage to instrument cluster connector I21-1 terminal No. 4 and ground to connector I21-3 terminal No. 9. Connect a variable resistance to instrument cluster connector I21-3 terminals No. 2 and No. 9. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  3. Slowly change variable resistance while monitoring fuel gauge needle. As resistance changes, needle position should change as specified. See FUEL GAUGE RESISTANCE (SONATA)  table. Replace fuel gauge if needle does not move to specified position.
FUEL GAUGE RESISTANCE (SONATA)

Gauge Needle Position Ohms
"E" Empty 95.0
1/2 32.5
"F" Full 7.0
