Component Disassembly & Reassembly: Differential: Reassembly

  1. Install differential carrier side bearings (if removed). Install side gears and spacers. If original side gears are reused, ensure they are installed in original positions. If NEW side gears are used, use NEW spacers of .039" (1.00 mm) thickness.
  2. Place washers on back of pinion gears. Install both pinion gears at same time. Rotate pinion gears to mesh with side gears. Install pinion shaft. Measure backlash between side gears and pinion gears. Measure right and left side gear backlash.
  3. Backlash should be .0010-.0059" (.025-:150 mm) on both sides. If backlash is incorrect, remove pinion and side gears and install thicker or thinner spacers behind side gears to achieve correct backlash. See SIDE GEAR SPACERS  table.
  4. Install pinion shaft lock pin. Ensure lock pin does not protrude more than .12" (3.0 mm) from differential case. Install ring gear bolts with NEW lock washers. Tighten ring gear bolts in a crisscross pattern to 96-103 ft. lbs. (130-140 N.m).
