Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal
- Disconnect fuel hoses. Remove rear seat cushion and carpet. Start engine and disconnect fuel pump connector. Wait until engine stops. Turn ignition key to "OFF" position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Plug fuel hoses to prevent leakage.
- Remove battery and battery tray. Disconnect air cleaner assembly. Disconnect back-up light, engine, starter motor and A/C harness connectors. On 5-speed manual transaxle models, disconnect select control valve connector. Disconnect alternator and oil pressure sending unit harness connectors. Drain engine oil and coolant.
- On automatic transaxle models, label and disconnect transaxle oil cooler lines. Plug lines to prevent contamination. On all models, remove radiator hoses. Remove radiator and cooling fan assembly. Disconnect ignition coil harness and coil wire. Disconnect engine ground cable.
- Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose. Remove fuel supply, return and vapor hoses from engine. Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect throttle cable. On manual transaxle models, disconnect clutch cable from transaxle.
- On automatic transaxle models, disconnect control cable from transaxle. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle. Discharge A/C and disconnect A/C hoses at compressor (if equipped). Plug openings in compressor and hoses to prevent contamination. Remove power steering pump from engine. Wire power steering pump aside.
- From under vehicle, remove undercover and drain transaxle. Disconnect and suspend exhaust pipe. Remove shift control rod and extension rod from manual transaxle. Disconnect stabilizer bar from lower arms. Disconnect ball joint from knuckle. Disconnect tie rod from end of knuckle.
- On turbocharged models, disconnect engine oil cooler hoses at engine. On all models, remove right and left drive axle shafts and center bearing (if equipped) from transaxle case. Suspend axle shafts and lower arms with string to prevent damaging joints. Cover holes in transaxle case to prevent contamination.NOTE: Drive axle shaft retainer rings should be replaced whenever drive axle shafts are removed from transaxle.
- Suspend engine with chains attached to hoisting brackets. Remove front roll stopper insulator bolt. Remove rear roll stopper insulator bolt. Remove attaching nut from left mount insulator, but DO NOT remove bolt. Raise engine slightly. Ensure all cables, hoses and electrical harnesses are disconnected from engine.
- Remove cover from inside right inner fender panel. Remove transaxle mounting bracket bolts. Remove left insulator bolt. Remove engine/transaxle assembly from vehicle while pushing transaxle side downward during removal.
