Main & Connecting Rod Bearings: Notes

  1. Remove timing belt train. Remove front case, flywheel, cylinder head assembly and oil pan. Remove rear plate and rear oil seal. Remove connecting rod caps. Remove main bearing caps and remove crankshaft.
  2. Keep bearings in order for reassembly reference. Inspect each bearing for peeling, melting, seizure or improper contact. Replace defective bearings. Measure outside diameter of crankshaft and connecting rod journals to determine if out-of-round or tapered. Out-of-round or taper limits .0004" (.01 mm).
  3. Use Plastigage method to measure bearing clearance. If clearance exceeds limits, bearing should be replaced or undersize bearing installed. Main and connecting rod bearings are available in .010" (.25 mm), .020" (.50 mm) and .030" (.75 mm) undersizes.
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate bearings before installing. Tighten bolts to specification in 3 steps. Tighten main bearing caps in order of center, No. 2, No. 4, front and rear main caps.
