Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2012 GMC Yukon XL, 2012 GMC Yukon, 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2012 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2012 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:

The Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn procedure is required when the following service procedures have been performed, regardless of whether DTC P0315 is set:

  • A crankshaft position sensor replacement
  • An engine control module (ECM) replacement
  • An engine replacement
  • A crankshaft balancer replacement
  • A crankshaft replacement
  • Any engine repairs which disturb the crankshaft to crankshaft position sensor relationship.
NOTE:

The ECM monitors certain component signals to determine if all the conditions are met to continue with the Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Procedure.

  1. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Verify no other DTCs are set, except DTCs P0300-P0308, or P0315.
  2. Select the Crankshaft Pos. Variation Learn procedure with a scan tool.
  3. NOTE:

    Close the hood.

    NOTE:

Observe the appropriate RPM values for fuel cut-off.

    NOTE:

The engine must be at operating temperature.

  4. The scan tool instructs you to perform the following:
    1. Block drive wheels.
    2. Set parking brake.
    3. Cycle the ignition.
    4. Apply and hold brake pedal.
    5. NOTE:

The vehicle must remain in PARK/NEUTRAL.

    6. Start and idle the engine.
  5. NOTE:

The scan tool monitors certain component signals to determine if all the conditions are met to continue with the procedure. The scan tool only displays the conditions that inhibit the procedure. The scan tool monitors the following components:

    • CKP sensors activity-If there is a CKP sensor condition, refer to the applicable DTC that set.
    • Camshaft position (CMP) sensor activity-If there is a CMP sensor condition, refer to the applicable DTC that set.
    • Engine coolant temperature (ECT)-If the ECT is not warm enough, idle the engine until the engine coolant reaches the correct temperature.
  6. Enable the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure with a scan tool.
  7. NOTE:

Do not accelerate beyond the RPM values for fuel cut-off.

  8. Accelerate to wide open throttle (WOT) and release the throttle when fuel cut-off occurs.
  9. Test in progress.
  10. The scan tool displays Learn Status: Learned this ignition.
  11. NOTE:

Verify that DTC P0315 ran and passed; then the CKP Variation Learn Procedure is complete. If the scan tool indicates DTC P0315 failed or did not run, or any other DTCs set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle for the applicable DTC.

  12. Once the Learn Procedure has successfully completed, and in order to store the crankshaft position system variation values in the ECM, turn OFF the ignition and verify all vehicle systems are OFF. This may take up to 2 minutes.
