Circuit/System Testing

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2012 GMC Yukon XL, 2012 GMC Yukon, 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2012 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2012 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down. Disconnect the X277 inline harness connector at the heated steering wheel control module.
  2. Test for less than 10 Ω between the ground terminal B X277 and ground.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  3. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal A X277 and ground.
    • If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition OFF, reconnect the inline harness connector X277, disconnect the harness connector at the steering wheel control switch - left.
  5. Test for less than 10 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 8 and ground.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  6. Ignition ON, test for 4.5-5.5 V between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground.
    • If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the heated steering wheel control module.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the heated steering wheel control module.
  7. Test for 80-90 KΩ between the low reference circuit terminal 9 and ground.
    • If less than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the body control module.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the body control module.
  8. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire momentarily between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground circuit terminal 8. Using a DMM, test for B+ between the control circuit terminal 4 and ground.
    • If not the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the heated steering wheel control module.
  9. Ignition OFF, disconnect the inline harness connector at the heated steering wheel.
  10. Test for less than 10 Ω between the ground circuit terminal A and ground.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  11. At the heated steering wheel, test for less than 10 Ω between the control circuit terminal B and the ground circuit terminal A.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the heated steering wheel.
  12. Ignition OFF, test for 1.8-2.8 MΩ between the signal circuit terminal C and ground.
    • If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the heated steering wheel control module.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the heated steering wheel control module.
  13. Ignition ON, test for 4.2-5.8 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal D and ground.
    • If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the heated steering wheel control module.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the heated steering wheel control module.
  14. Test for 6000-35000 Ω at the steering wheel side of the connector between the signal circuit terminal C and the 5 V reference circuit terminal D.
    • If not within the specified range, replace the heated steering wheel.
  15. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the heated steering wheel control module.
