Alternate Adjustment Method
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2011 GMC Yukon XL, 2011 GMC Yukon, 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2011 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Install the original shim to the shaft.
Use the chassis grease in order to hold the shim in place.
- Install the inner axle housing assembly to the differential carrier case.
Do not use sealer at this time.
- Install the bolts and tighten to 40 N.m (30 lb ft).
- Measure the shaft end play using the following procedure:
- Install the J 8001
or the equivalent on the axle tube end.
The plunger of the indicator must be at a right angle to the axle flange.
- Move the shaft back and forth and read the end play.
The correct end play is 0.03-0.51 mm (0.001-0.020 in).
- If the end play is incorrect, install a thicker or thinner shim as needed in order to bring the end play into the specified range.
- Install the J 8001
or the equivalent on the axle tube end.
NOTE:
Use this method only if the proper tools for calculating the shim size are unavailable.
