Installation Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2008 GMC Yukon XL, 2008 GMC Yukon, 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2008 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If the differential case has become separated, assemble the differential case by aligning the two arrows inside the differential case as shown.
- Install the ring gear to the differential case.
- Hand tighten the new ring gear bolts.
- Tighten the new ring gear bolts. Tighten the ring gear bolts alternately and in stages, gradually pulling the ring gear onto the differential case.
Tighten: Tighten the ring gear bolts in sequence to 165 N.m (122 lb ft).
- Install the pinion and the pinion bearings. Refer to Drive Pinion Housing and/or Seal Replacement .
- Install the pinion gear bearing retainer. Refer to Drive Pinion Housing and/or Seal Replacement .
- Install the differential assembly. Refer to Differential Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) or Differential Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle) .
- Fill the axle with lubricant. Use the proper fluid. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle) or Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) .
- Lower the vehicle.
IMPORTANT:
The mating surface of the ring gear and the differential case must be clean and free of burrs before installing the ring gear.
IMPORTANT:
DO NOT use air or power tools for the following procedure.
