Circuit/System Testing

- With the ignition OFF, disconnect the steering wheel module coil in-line connector located at the base of column. Refer to Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement for location of connector.
- Inspect the component and wiring harness sides of the in-line connector for damage or corrosion.
- If the in-line connector for the steering wheel module coil is damaged, the steering wheel module coil must be replaced.
- If the steering wheel module coil wiring harness side connector is damaged, replace the harness side of the connector.
- Use J 38715-100 adapter to connect the J 38715-A SIR Driver/Passenger Load Tool to the harness side of the steering wheel module coil in-line wiring harness connector. Use the BASE of COLUMN connector located on the load tool.
- With the ignition ON, use a scan tool to observe the SIR DTC display. Verify DTC B0042, B0043, or B0044 are set as current or in history.
- With the ignition OFF, disconnect and remove the J 38715-A and adapter.
- If DTC B0042, B0043, or B0044 is history reconnect the steering wheel module coil wiring harness. Use J 38715-30A adapter to connect the J 38715-A SIR Driver/Passenger Load Tool to the harness side of the steering wheel module connector. If DTC B0042, B0043, or B0044 is set as current, replace the steering wheel module coil. If DTC B0042, B0043, or B0044 are set in history, replace the steering wheel module.
- If DTC B0042, B0043, or B0044 is current a problem exists with the SDM and or the wiring harness. Remove the SDM connector. Inspect the SDM connector for damage or corrosion that may cause a malfunction in the steering wheel module coil high and/or low circuits. Refer to SDM replacement in Repair Instructions for connector location.
- If damage or corrosion is found make the appropriate repair.
- Test the high and low circuits between the SDM and steering wheel module coil for a short to voltage, short to ground, or open/low resistance.
- If circuits test good then replace the SDM.
