Power Steering Gear Replacement (Rack and Pinion)

Power Steering Gear Replacement (Rack and Pinion)

Callout Component Name

Tools Required

  • J 24319-B  Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller. See Special Tools .
  • J 44586  Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer. See Special Tools .

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the rack and pinion. Refer to Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the engine protection shield. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement .
  4. Place a suitable drain pan under the vehicle.
  5. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  6. Check for proper wheel alignment upon completion of the repair. Refer to Wheel Alignment Specifications .
1 Outer Tie Rod End Nut (Qty: 2)
NOTE: Do not attempt to disconnect a steering linkage joint by driving a wedge between the joint and the attached part. Seal damage may result which will cause premature failure of the joint.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .

Tighten:  60 N.m (44 lb ft)


Tip:  Remove the outer tie rod nuts.
2 Outer Tie Rod End (Qty: 2)
Tip:  Use the J 24319-B  to separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. See Special Tools .
3 Power Steering Hose Assembly Bolt (at rack and pinion)

Tighten:  12 N.m (106 lb in)

4 Power Steering Hose Assembly
Tip: 
5 Rack and Pinion Bolt (left side) (Qty: 2)

Tighten:  200 N.m (148 lb ft)


Tip:  Remove the left side bolts from the rack and pinion.
6 Rack and Pinion Bolt (right side) (Qty: 2)

Tighten:  100 N.m (74 lb ft)


Tip:  Remove the right side bolts from the rack and pinion.
