Power Steering Gear Replacement (Rack and Pinion)

Tools Required J 24319-B Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller. See Special Tools . J 44586 Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer. See Special Tools . Preliminary Procedures Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the rack and pinion. Refer to Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement . Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle . Remove the engine protection shield. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement . Place a suitable drain pan under the vehicle. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation . Check for proper wheel alignment upon completion of the repair. Refer to Wheel Alignment Specifications .
1	Outer Tie Rod End Nut (Qty: 2) NOTE: Do not attempt to disconnect a steering linkage joint by driving a wedge between the joint and the attached part. Seal damage may result which will cause premature failure of the joint. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice . Tighten: 60 N.m (44 lb ft) Tip: Remove the outer tie rod nuts.
2	Outer Tie Rod End (Qty: 2) Tip: Use the J 24319-B to separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. See Special Tools .
3	Power Steering Hose Assembly Bolt (at rack and pinion) Tighten: 12 N.m (106 lb in)
4	Power Steering Hose Assembly Tip: Pull the hose assembly out of the rack and pinion Keep the area around the power steering hoses and power steering gear openings clean. Refer to Power Steering Hose Disconnected Notice .
5	Rack and Pinion Bolt (left side) (Qty: 2) Tighten: 200 N.m (148 lb ft) Tip: Remove the left side bolts from the rack and pinion.
6	Rack and Pinion Bolt (right side) (Qty: 2) Tighten: 100 N.m (74 lb ft) Tip: Remove the right side bolts from the rack and pinion.
7	Rack and Pinion Tip: Use the J 44586 to replace the power steering gear oil seals if necessary. See Special Tools . Fill and bleed the power steering system upon completion of the repair. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
