EPS Symptom Troubleshooting - EPS indicator does not go off (2016 2017 2018)

EPS indicator does not go off 

NOTE:
  • The indicator comes on when the reprogramming fails.
  • Do the reprogramming of the EPS control unit again.
  • The all sensor learn in the VSA system may not have properly completed.
  1. Problem verification

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Check the EPS indicator.

    Does the EPS indicator come on, then go off?

    YES 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

    NO 

    Go to step 2.

  2. All DTCs check

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. All DTCs check with the HDS.

    All DTCs

    Are there DTCs indicated?

    YES 

    Go to indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

    NO 

    Go to step 3.

  3. Fuse check 1

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Check the following fuse.

    Fuse No. B1-1 (60 A)
    Location Auxiliary under-hood fuse/relay box

    Is the fuse OK?

    YES 

    The fuse is OK. Reinstall the fuse, then go to step 4.

    NO 

    Replace the fuse. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, then to the OFF (LOCK) mode. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground in the No. B1- 1 (60 A) fuse circuit.

  4. Fuse check 2

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Check the following fuse.

    Fuse No. C7 (15 A)
    Location Under-dash fuse/relay box

    Is the fuse OK?

    YES 

    The fuse is OK. Reinstall the fuse, then go to step 5.

    NO 

    Replace the fuse. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, then to the OFF (LOCK) mode. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground in the No. C7 (15A) fuse circuit.

  5. Fuse check 3

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Check the following fuse.

    Fuse No. D2 (7.5 A)
    Location Auxiliary under-dash fuse/relay box

    Is the fuse OK?

    YES 

    The fuse is OK. Reinstall the fuse, then go to step 6.

    NO 

    Replace the fuse. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, then to the OFF (LOCK) mode. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground in the No. D2 (7.5A) fuse circuit.

  6. DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 check

    - 1. Remove the DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 from the auxiliary under-dash fuse/relay box, and test it.

    Is the relay OK?

    YES 

    The relay is OK. Reinstall the relay, then g to step 7.

    NO 

    Replace the DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2.

  7. Open wire check (IG1 VSA (DC/DC) line) 1

    - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

    EPS control unit connector B (8P)

    - 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 3. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle ON mode
      EPS control unit connector B (8P): disconnected
    Test point 1 EPS control unit connector B (8P) No. 7 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019),  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs 
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    The IG1 VSA (DC/DC) wire is OK. Go to step 12.

    NO 

    Go to step 8.

  8. Open wire check (IG1 VSA (DC-DC) line) 2

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Remove the DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 from the auxiliary under-dash fuse/relay box.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    EPS control unit connector B (8P)

    - 4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2: removed
      EPS control unit connector B (8P): disconnected
    Test point 1 DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 4P socket No. 1
    Test point 2 EPS control unit connector B (8P) No. 7 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs,  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019)

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The IG1 VSA (DC-DC) wire is OK. Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the IG1 VSA (DC-DC) wire between the DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 in the auxiliary under-dash fuse/relay box and the EPS control unit connector B.

  9. Open wire check (+B OUT2) line)

    - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

    DC-DC converter connector B (5P)

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2: removed
      DC-DC converter connector B (5P): disconnected
    Test point 1 DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 socket No. 2
    Test point 2 DC-DC converter connector B (5P) No. 5

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The +B OUT2 wire is OK. Go to step 10.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the +B OUT2 wire between the DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 in the auxiliary under-dash fuse/relay box and the DC-DC converter connector B.

  10. Open wire check (IG1 ACG line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle ON mode
      EPS control unit connector B (8P): disconnected
      DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2: removed
      DC-DC converter connector B (5P): disconnected
    Test point 1 DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 socket No. 3
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    The IG1 ACG wire is OK. Go to step 11.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the IG1 ACG wire between the under-dash fuse/relay box and the DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 in the auxiliary under-dash fuse/relay box.

  11. Open wire check (GND line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Remove the DC-DC converter IG1 relay 1 from the auxiliary under-dash fuse/relay box.

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      DC-DC converter IG1 relay 1: removed
      DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2: removed
    Test point 1 DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 socket No. 4
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The GND wire is OK. Replace the DC-DC converter .

    NO 

    Repair an open or high resistance in the GND wire between the DC-DC converter IG1 relay 2 in the auxiliary under-dash fuse/relay box and the body ground (G301).

  12. Open wire check (+B EPS line)

    - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

    EPS control unit connector A (2P)

    - 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      EPS control unit connector A (2P): disconnected
    Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (2P) No. 2 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs,  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) 
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    The +B EPS wire is OK. Go to step 13.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the +B EPS wire between the EPS control unit and the No. B1- 1 (60 A) fuse in the auxiliary under-hood fuse/relay box.

  13. Open wire check (EPS GND line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      EPS control unit connector A (2P): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector B (8P): disconnected
    Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (2P) No. 1 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs,  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) 
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The EPS GND wire is OK. Go to step 14.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the EPS GND wire between the EPS control unit and body ground (G302).

  14. Open wire check (F-CAN A_H, F-CAN A_L lines)

    - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

    Gauge control module 32P connector

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      EPS control unit connector A (2P): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector B (8P): disconnected
      Gauge control 32P module connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 EPS control unit connector B (8P) No. 3 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs,  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) 
    Test point 2 Gauge control module 32P connector No. 24 - Refer to: Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) , or Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) , or Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2020 2021) .
    Test point 1 EPS control unit connector B (8P) No. 8 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs,  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) 
    Test point 2 Gauge control module 32P connector No. 25 - Refer to: Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) , or Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) , or Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2020 2021) .

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN A_H and F-CAN A_L wires are OK. Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting or substitute a known-good EPS motor/control unit .

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN A_H and/or F-CAN A_L wires between the EPS control unit and the gauge control module.



EPS indicator does not go off 

NOTE:
  • The indicator comes on when the reprogramming fails.
  • Do the reprogramming of the EPS control unit again.
  • The all sensor learn in the VSA system may not have properly completed.
  1. Problem verification

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Check the EPS indicator.

    Does the EPS indicator come on, then go off?

    YES 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

    NO 

    Go to step 2.

  2. All DTCs check

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. All DTCs check with the HDS.

    All DTCs

    Are there DTCs indicated?

    YES 

    Go to indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

    NO 

    Go to step 3.

  3. Fuse check 1

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Check the following fuse.

    Fuse No. B1-1 (60 A)
    Location Auxiliary under-hood fuse/relay box

    Is the fuse OK?

    YES 

    The fuse is OK. Reinstall the fuse, then go to step 4.

    NO 

    Replace the fuse. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, then to the OFF (LOCK) mode. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground in the No. B1- 1 (60 A) fuse circuit.

  4. Fuse check 2

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Check the following fuse.

    Fuse No. C9 (7.5 A)
    Location Under-dash fuse/relay box

    Is the fuse OK?

    YES 

    The fuse is OK. Reinstall the fuse, then go to step 5.

    NO 

    Replace the fuse. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, then to the OFF (LOCK) mode. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground in the No. C9 (7.5A) fuse circuit.

  5. Open wire check (+B EPS line)

    - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

    EPS control unit connector A (2P)

    - 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      EPS control unit connector A (2P): disconnected
    Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (2P) No. 2 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs,  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) 
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    The +B EPS wire is OK. Go to step 6.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the +B EPS wire between the EPS control unit and the No. B1- 1 (60 A) fuse in the auxiliary under-hood fuse/relay box.

  6. IG1A relay check

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Remove the IG1A relay from the uder-dash fuse/relay box, and test it.

    Is the relay OK?

    YES 

    The relay is OK. Reinstall the relay, then go to step 7.

    NO 

    Replace the IG1A relay.

  7. Open wire check (IG1 VSA line)

    - 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      IG1A relay: removed
      EPS control unit connector B (8P): disconnected
    Test point 1 IG1A relay 4P socket No. 2
    Test point 2 EPS control unit connector B (8P) No. 7 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019),  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The IG1 VSA wire is OK. Go to step 8.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the IG1 VSA wire between the IG1A relay in the under-dash fuse/relay box and the EPS control unit connector B.

  8. Open wire check (+B IG MAIN2)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle ON mode
      IG1A relay: removed
    Test point 1 IG1A relay 4P socket No. 1
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    The +B IG MAIN2 wire is OK. Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the +B IG MAIN2 wire between the No.B1-5 (30A) fuse in the auxiliary under-hood fuse/relay box and the IG1A relay in the under-dash fuse/relay box.

  9. Open wire check (IG1 RLY CL line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector B (36P)

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      IG1A relay: removed
      Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector B (36P): disconnected
    Test point 1 IG1A relay 4P socket No. 4
    Test point 2 Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector B (36P) No. 17 - Refer to: Keyless Access/TPMS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) , or Keyless Access/TPMS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019 2020 2021) .

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The IG1 RLY CL wire is OK. Go to step 10.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the IG1 RLY CL wire between the Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector B (36P) and the IG1A relay in the under-dash fuse/relay box.

  10. Open wire check (SMART RLY GND line)

    - 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      IG1A relay: removed
      Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector B (36P): disconnected
    Test point 1 IG1A relay 4P socket No. 3
    Test point 2 Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector B (36P) No. 35 - Refer to: Keyless Access/TPMS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) , or Keyless Access/TPMS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019 2020 2021) .

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The SMART RLY GND wire is OK. Go to step 11.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the SMART RLY GND wire between the Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector B (36P) and the IG1A relay in the under-dash fuse/relay box.

  11. Open wire check (EPS GND line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      EPS control unit connector A (2P): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector B (8P): disconnected
    Test point 1 EPS control unit connector A (2P) No. 1 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019),  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs 
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The EPS GND wire is OK. Go to step 12.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the EPS GND wire between the EPS control unit and body ground (G302).

  12. Open wire check (F-CAN_H, F-CAN_L lines)

    - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

    Gauge control module 32P connector

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      EPS control unit connector A (2P): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector B (8P): disconnected
      Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 EPS control unit connector B (8P) No. 3 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs,  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) 
    Test point 2 Gauge control module 32P connector No. 24 - Refer to: Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) , or Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) , or Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2020 2021) .
    Test point 1 EPS control unit connector B (8P) No. 8 - Refer to: EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs,  or EPS Control Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) 
    Test point 2 Gauge control module 32P connector No. 25 - Refer to: Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) , or Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019) , or Gauge Control Module Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2020 2021) .

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN_H and F-CAN_L wires are OK. Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting or substitute a known-good EPS motor/control unit .

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_H and/or F-CAN_L wire between the EPS control unit and the gauge control module.
