POOR OR NO SOUND WITH AM/FM RADIO (With Navigation) (2016 2017 2018)

NOTE: 

  1. Problem verification

    -1. Park the vehicle in an open area.

    - 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 3. Turn on the audio system, and select AM or FM radio station.

    Is the sound quality normal?

    YES 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

    NO 

    The failure is duplicated, go to step 2.

  2. Seek stop test

    -1. Do the Seek Stop Test in the Sound Quality Diagnosis.

    Sound Quality Diagnosis (2016 2017 2018)

    Is the test vehicle within 10 % of the known-good vehicle?

    YES 

    Go to step 7.

    NO 

    Go to step 3.

  3. Window antenna check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. With the help of an assistant inside the vehicle, have the assistant shine a strong flashlight (A) along each antenna wire (B). Check from the outside of the vehicle for any breaks or openings in the antenna wires (the light shines through any breaks or cuts).

    NOTE:  It is easier to see the breaks if you do this test in a dark or shaded area.

    Are there any breaks or cuts in the antenna wire?

    YES 

    Repair the window antenna.

    Window Antenna Repair (2016 2017 2018) , or

    Right Side Quarter Glass Removal And Installation if the damaged section is too long.

    NO 

    Go to step 4.

  4. Shorted wire check (AM/FM line)

    -1. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Window antenna (AM/FM) 1P connector
    Tuner unit connector B (5P)

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Window antenna (AM/FM) 1P connector: disconnected
      Tuner unit connector B (5P) disconnected
    Test point 1 Tuner unit connector B (5P) No. 2 - Refer to: Tuner Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018)
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short to body ground in the wire between the window antenna and the tuner unit. Replace the affected antenna lead.

    NO 

    The AM/FM wire is not shorted. Go to step 5.

  5. Shorted wire check (AM/FM line to SH (AM/FM) line)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Window antenna (AM/FM) 1P connector: disconnected
      Tuner unit connector B (5P) disconnected
    Test point 1 Tuner unit connector B (5P) No. 2 - Refer to:Tuner Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs 2016 2017 2018)
    Test point 2 Tuner unit connector B (5P) No. 4 - Refer to: Tuner Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs 2016 2017 2018)

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short in the wires between the window antenna and the tuner unit. Replace the affected antenna lead.

    NO 

    The AM/FM and the SH (AM/FM) wires are not shorted. Go to step 6.

  6. Open wire check (AM/FM line)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Window antenna (AM/FM) 1P connector: disconnected
      Tuner unit connector B (5P) disconnected
    Test point 1 Tuner unit connector B (5P) No. 2 - Refer to: Tuner Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs 2016 2017 2018)
    Test point 2 Window antenna (AM/FM) 1P connector No. 1

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Replace the tuner unit - Refer to:

    Tuner Unit Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018) or

    NO 

    There is an open in the wire between the window antenna and the tuner unit. Replace the affected antenna lead.

  7. Shorted wire check (GA AUDIO lines) 1

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P)
    Tuner unit connector A (12P)
    CD player unit 16P connector (with CD player unit)

    - 3. Check for continuity between following test points and body ground individually.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio-navigation unit connector E (5P) disconnected
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected (with CD player unit)
    Connector  Terminal 
    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) - Refer to:
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    No. 3
    No. 4
    No. 9
    No. 10

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the tuner unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The GA AUDIO wires are not shorted to ground. Go to step 8.

  8. Shorted wire check (GA AUDIO lines) 2

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) disconnected
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected (with CD player unit)
    Test point 1: 

    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) - Refer to:


    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    Test points 2: 

    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) - Refer to:


    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .
    No. 3 No. 4, No. 5, No. 9, No. 10
    No. 4 No. 5, No. 9, No. 10
    No. 5 No. 9, No. 10
    No. 9 No. 10

    Is there continuity between any of the terminals?

    YES 

    There is a short in the wires between the audio-navigation unit and the tuner unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The GA AUDIO wires are not shorted. Go to step 9.

  9. Open wire check (GA AUDIO lines)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) disconnected
      Tuner unit connector A (12P) disconnected
      CD player unit 16P connector: disconnected (with CD player unit)
    Test point 1: 

    Tuner unit connector A (12P) - Refer to:


    Tuner Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs 2016 2017 2018)
    Test point 2: 

    Audio-navigation unit connector D (12P) - Refer to:


    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016) or
    Audio-Navigation Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018) .

    No. 4 No. 4

    No. 10 No. 10

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The GA AUDIO wires are OK. Go to step 10.

    NO 

    There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the tuner unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.

  10. Tuner unit check (substitution)

    -1. Substitute a known-good tuner unit.

    - 2. Reconnect all the connectors, and recheck.

    Does the symptom go away?

    YES 

    Replace the original tuner unit.

    NO
