REAR ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING - NO SOUND/NO DISPLAY WITH AUXILIARY VIDEO ACCESSORY INPUTS (Without Navigation) (2016 2017 2018)

No sound/no display with auxiliary video accessory inputs 

NOTE: 

  1. Problem verification

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Turn on the rear entertainment system.

    - 3. Connect an auxiliary video accessory to the RES auxiliary jack assembly, and check the sound and image on the rear display.

    Does the image on the rear display appear and is the sound normal?

    YES 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

    NO 

    The failure is duplicated, go to step 2.

  2. Determine possible failure area (auxiliary video accessory, audio signal circuit side, video signal circuit side)

    -1. Substitute a known-good auxiliary video accessory and/or RCA cable, and recheck.

    Does the image on the rear display appear and is the sound normal?

    YES 

    Original auxiliary video accessory or RCA cable is faulty.

    NO: No sound

    Go to step 7.

    NO: No display

    Go to step 3.

  3. Shorted wire check (AUX1 NTSC SIG, AUX1 NTSC GND lines)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Rear controller and screen connector B (12P)
    RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) disconnected
      RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) No. 3 
    Test point 2 Body ground
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) No. 8 
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the rear controller and screen and the RES auxiliary jack assembly. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The AUX1 NTSC SIG and AUX1 NTSC GND wires are not shorted. Go to step 4.

  4. Shorted wire check (AUX1 NTSC lines)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) disconnected
      RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 

    Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) 

    Test points 2 

    Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) 

    No. 3 No. 8, No. 9
    No. 8 No. 9

    Is there continuity between any of the terminals?

    YES 

    There is a short in the wires between the rear controller and screen and the RES auxiliary jack assembly. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The AUX1 NTSC wires are not shorted. Go to step 5.

  5. Open wire check (AUX1 NTSC SIG, AUX1 NTSC GND lines)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) disconnected
      RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) No. 3 
    Test point 1 RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector No. 14 - Refer to:
    Rear Entertainment System (RES) Auxiliary Jack Assembly Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) 
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) No. 8 
    Test point 2 RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector No. 13 - Refer to:
    Rear Entertainment System (RES) Auxiliary Jack Assembly Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) 

    Is there continuity

    YES 

    The AUX1 NTSC SIG and AUX1 NTSC GND wires are OK. Go to step 6.

    NO 

    There is an open in the wire(s) between the rear controller and screen and the RES auxiliary jack assembly. Replace the affected shielded harness.

  6. RES auxiliary jack assembly check (substitution)

    -1. Substitute a known-good RES auxiliary jack assembly, and recheck.

    Does the symptom go away?

    YES 

    Replace the original RES auxiliary jack assembly.

    NO 

    Replace the rear controller and screen. Rear Controller and Screen Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018) .

  7. Shorted wire check (AUX1 L, AUX1 R lines)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Rear controller and screen connector B (12P)
    RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) disconnected
      RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector: disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) No. 5 
    Test point 2 Body ground
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) No. 11 
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the rear controller and screen and the RES auxiliary jack assembly. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The AUX1 L and AUX1 R wires are not shorted. Go to step 8.

  8. Shorted wire check (AUX1 lines)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) disconnected
      RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 

    Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) 

    Test points 2 

    Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) 

    No. 5 No. 6, No. 11, No. 12
    No. 11 No. 6, No. 12

    Is there continuity between any of the terminals?

    YES 

    There is a short in the wires between the rear controller and screen and the RES auxiliary jack assembly. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The AUX1 wires are not shorted. Go to step 9.

  9. Open wire check (AUX1 L, AUX1 R, AUX1 L/R GND lines)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) disconnected
      RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1: 

    Rear controller and screen connector B (12P) 

    Test point 2: 

    RES auxiliary jack assembly 14P connector - Refer to:

    No. 5 No. 11
    No. 6 No. 10
    No. 11 No. 9

    Is there continuity

    YES 

    The AUX1 L, AUX1 R, and AUX1 L/R GND wires are OK. Go to step 10.

    NO 

    There is an open in the wire(s) between the rear controller and screen and the RES auxiliary jack assembly. Replace the affected shielded harness.

  10. Shorted wire check (RES AUDIO L SIG, RES AUDIO R SIG lines)

    -1. Disconnect the following connectors.

    Rear controller and screen connector A (24P)
    Audio unit connector H (24P)

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio unit connector H (24P) disconnected
      Rear controller and screen connector A (24P) disconnected
    Test circuit 1  
    Test point 1 Audio unit connector H (24P) No. 20 - Refer to:
    Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs [Display Audio Type (8-inch Screen)] (2016 2017 2018) 
    Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs [Color Audio Type (5-inch Screen)] (2016 2017)

    Test point 2 Body ground
    Test circuit 2  
    Test point 1 Audio unit connector H (24P) No. 21 - Refer to:

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the rear controller and screen. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The RES AUDIO L SIG and RES AUDIO R SIG wires are not shorted. Go to step 11.

  11. Shorted wire check (RES AUDIO lines)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio unit connector H (24P) disconnected
      Rear controller and screen connector A (24P) disconnected
    Test point 1 

    Audio unit connector H (24P) - Refer to:

    Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs [Color Audio Type (5-inch Screen)] (2016 2017)

    Is there continuity between any of the terminals?

    YES 

    There is a short in the wires between the audio unit and the rear controller and screen. Replace the affected shielded harness.

    NO 

    The RES AUDIO wires are not shorted. Go to step 12.

  12. Open wire check (RES AUDIO L SIG, RES AUDIO R SIG, RES AUDIO L/R GND lines)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Audio unit connector H (24P) disconnected
      Rear controller and screen connector A (24P) disconnected
    Test point 1: 
    Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs [Display Audio Type (8-inch Screen)] (2016 2017 2018) 
    Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs [Color Audio Type (5-inch Screen)] (2016 2017) 
    Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs [Color Audio Type (5-inch Screen)] (2018) .
    Test point 2: 

    Rear controller and screen connector A (24P) 

    No. 8 No. 5
    No. 20 No. 16
    No. 21 No. 4

    Is there continuity

    YES 

    The RES AUDIO L SIG, RES AUDIO R SIG, and RES AUDIO L/R GND wires are OK. Go to step 13.

    NO 

    There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the rear controller and screen. Replace the affected shielded harness.

  13. RES auxiliary jack assembly check (substitution)

    -1. Substitute a known-good RES auxiliary jack assembly, and recheck.

    Rear Entertainment System (RES) Auxiliary Jack Assembly Removal And Installation

    Does the symptom go away?

    YES 

    Replace the original RES auxiliary jack assembly.

    NO 

    Replace the rear controller and screen, Rear Controller and Screen Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018) , and recheck.

If the symptom does not go away, replace the audio unit - Refer to:

Audio Unit Removal and Installation (Color Audio Type [5-inch Screen]) .
