DTC (CAN GATEWAY)
- Problem verification
-1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.
-5. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC U0038-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch E Bus Off DTC (CAN GATEWAY)
Is DTC U0038-00 indicated?
YES
The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.
NO
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. If the on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the on-board snapshot .
- Shorted unit check (PCM)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS, and wait more than 1 minute.
-3. Disconnect the following connector.
PCM connector A (50P) -4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-5. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-6. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-7. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.
-8. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC U0038-00 indicated?
YES
Go to step 3.
NO
Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good PCM , then recheck. If DTC U0038-00 goes away and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM .
- Shorted unit check (SBW shifter control module)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Disconnect the following connector.
SBW shifter control module 20P connector -3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.
-7. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC U0038-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch E Bus Off DTC (CAN GATEWAY)
Is DTC U0038-00 indicated?
YES
Go to step 4.
NO
Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good SBW shifter control module , then recheck. If the DTC U0038-00 goes away and the SBW shifter control module was substituted, replace the original SBW shifter control module .
- Shorted unit check (park pawl actuator driver unit)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Disconnect the following connector.
Park pawl actuator driver unit 26P connector -3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.
-7. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC U0038-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch E Bus Off DTC (CAN GATEWAY)
Is DTC U0038-00 indicated?
YES
Go to step 5.
NO
Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good park pawl actuator driver unit , then recheck. If the DTC U0038-00 goes away and the park pawl actuator driver unit was substituted, replace the original park pawl actuator driver unit .
- Shorted unit check (battery charge control module)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure .
-3. Disconnect the following connector.
Battery charge control module connector B (40P) -4. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure .
-5. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-6. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-7. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-8. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait for 6 seconds.
-9. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC U0038-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch E Bus Off DTC (CAN GATEWAY)
Is DTC U0038-00 indicated?
YES
Go to step 6.
NO
Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good battery charge control module , then recheck. If the DTC U0038-00 goes away and the battery charge control module was substituted, replace the original battery charge control module .
- Shorted unit check (PCU)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Disconnect the following connector.
PCU 33P connector NOTE: Before disconnecting the PCU connector, do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure , and turn off the service plug .-3. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure .
-4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-5. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-6. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-7. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.
-8. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC U0038-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch E Bus Off DTC (CAN GATEWAY)
Is DTC U0038-00 indicated?
YES
Go to step 7.
NO
Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good PCU , then recheck. If the DTC U0038-00 goes away and the PCU was substituted, replace the original PCU .
- Shorted unit check (IPU)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Disconnect the following connector.
IPU 33P connector NOTE: Before disconnecting the battery condition monitor module connector, do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure , and turn off the service plug .-3. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure .
-4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-5. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-6. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-7. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.
-8. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC U0038-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch E Bus Off DTC (CAN GATEWAY)
Is DTC U0038-00 indicated?
YES
Go to step 8.
NO
Go to step 11.
- Shorted wire check (EPP-CAN A_H line)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Disconnect the following connector.
CAN gateway 16P connector -3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected SBW shifter control module 20P connector: disconnected Park pawl actuator driver unit 26P connector: disconnected PCU 33P connector: disconnected IPU 33P connector: disconnected CAN gateway 16P connector: disconnected Test point 1 CAN gateway 16P connector (female terminals) No. 16: Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
Repair a short in the EPP-CAN A_H wire between the CAN gateway and the connected units.
NO
Go to step 9.
- Shorted wire check (EPP-CAN A_L line)
-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected SBW shifter control module 20P connector: disconnected Park pawl actuator driver unit 26P connector: disconnected PCU 33P connector: disconnected IPU 33P connector: disconnected CAN gateway 16P connector: disconnected Test point 1 CAN gateway 16P connector (female terminals) No. 8: Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
Repair a short in the EPP-CAN A_L wire between the CAN gateway and the connected units.
NO
Go to step 10.
- Shorted wire check (EPP-CAN A_H line to EPP-CAN A_L line)
-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected SBW shifter control module 20P connector: disconnected Park pawl actuator driver unit 26P connector: disconnected PCU 33P connector: disconnected IPU 33P connector: disconnected CAN gateway 16P connector: disconnected Test point 1 CAN gateway 16P connector (female terminals) No. 8: Test point 2 CAN gateway 16P connector (female terminals) No. 16: Is there continuity?
YES
Repair a short in the EPP-CAN A_H wire to the EPP-CAN A_L wire between CAN gateway terminals No. 8 and No. 16.
NO
Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good CAN gateway , then recheck. If DTC U0038-00 goes away and the CAN gateway was substituted, replace the original CAN gateway .
- Shorted wire check (EPP-CAN A_H line, EPP-CAN A_L line)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure .
-3. Remove the service plug .
-4. Remove the IPU .
-5. Remove the IPU cover .
-6. Disconnect the following connectors.
Battery condition monitor module A connector G (24P) Battery condition monitor module B connector G (24P) -7. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected SBW shifter control module 20P connector: disconnected Park pawl actuator driver unit 26P connector: disconnected Battery charge control module connector B (40P): disconnected PCU 33P connector: disconnected IPU 33P connector: disconnected Battery condition monitor module A connector G (24P): disconnected Battery condition monitor module B connector G (24P): disconnected Test point 1 Battery condition monitor module A connector G (24P) No. 11 Test point 2 Body ground Test point 1 Battery condition monitor module A connector G (24P) No. 23 Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
Repair an short in the EPP-CAN A_H wire or the EPP-CAN A_L wire between the IPU 33P connector, battery condition monitor module A, battery condition monitor module B.
NO
Go to step 12.
- Shorted wire check (EPP-CAN A_H line to EPP-CAN A_L line)
-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected SBW shifter control module 20P connector: disconnected Park pawl actuator driver unit 26P connector: disconnected Battery charge control module connector B (40P): disconnected PCU 33P connector: disconnected IPU 33P connector: disconnected Battery condition monitor module A connector G (24P): disconnected Battery condition monitor module B connector G (24P): disconnected Test point 1 Battery condition monitor module A connector G (24P) No. 11 Test point 2 Battery condition monitor module A connector G (24P) No. 23 Is there continuity?
YES
Repair an short in the EPP-CAN A_H to EPP-CAN A_L wires between the IPU 33P connector, battery condition monitor module A, battery condition monitor module B.
NO
Go to step 13.
- Battery condition monitor module B check
-1. Reconnect battery condition monitor module A connector G (24P).
-2. Install the IPU cover .
-3. Install the IPU .
-4. Install the service plug .
-5. Reconnect all connectors.
-6. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure .
-7. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-8. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-9. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-10. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait for 6 seconds.
-11. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC U0038-00 indicated?
YES
Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good battery condition monitor module A , then recheck. If the DTC U0038-00 goes away and battery condition monitor module A was substituted, replace original battery condition monitor module A .
NO
Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good battery condition monitor module B , then recheck. If the DTC U0038-00 goes away and battery condition monitor module B was substituted, replace original battery condition monitor module B .
