Cylinder Head Overhaul: Inspection

Camshaft Inspection 

  1. VTC Actuator - Remove
  2. Exhaust Camshaft Sprocket - Remove
  3. Intake Camshaft - Remove
  4. Exhaust Camshaft - Remove
  5. CMP Pulse Plate B - Remove
  6. Exhaust Rocker Arm - Remove
  7. Intake Rocker Arm Assembly - Remove
  8. Intake Rocker Arm Assembly - Disassemble
  9. Camshaft - Inspect

    1. Apply new engine oil to the threads of the camshaft holder bolts.

    2. Put the rocker shaft holders, the camshafts, the camshaft holders, and cam chain guide B on the cylinder head, then tighten the camshaft holder bolts, in sequence, to the specified torque.

    Specified Torque 
    - : 15 N.m (1.5 kgf.m, 11 lbf.ft) 
    : 12 N.m (1.2 kgf.m, 9 lbf.ft) 

    3. Zero the dial indicator against the end of the camshaft, then push the camshaft back and forth, and read the end play. If the end play is beyond the service limit, replace the cylinder head and recheck. If it is still beyond the service limit, replace the camshaft.

    NOTE:  Do not rotate the camshaft during inspection.

    Camshaft End Play 
    Standard (New):  0.05-0.25 mm (0.0020-0.0098 in) 
    Service Limit:  0.40 mm (0.0157 in)

    4. Loosen the camshaft holder bolts two turns at a time, in a crisscross pattern. Then remove the camshaft holders from the cylinder head.

    5. Lift the camshafts out of the cylinder head, and wipe them clean, then inspect the lift ramps. Replace the camshaft if any lobes are pitted, scored, or excessively worn.

    6. Clean the camshaft journal surfaces in the cylinder head, then set the camshafts back in place. Place a plastigage strip across each journal.

    7. Install the camshaft holders, then tighten the camshaft holder bolts to the specified torque as shown in step 2.

    8. Remove the camshaft holders. Measure the widest portion of plastigage on each journal:
    • If the camshaft-to-holder clearance is within the service limits, go to step 10.
    • If the camshaft-to-holder clearance is beyond the service limit, and the camshaft has been replaced, replace the cylinder head.
    • If the camshaft-to-holder clearance is beyond the service limit, and the camshaft has not been replaced, go to step 9.
    Exhaust Camshaft-to-Holder Oil Clearance 
    Standard (New):   
    No. 1 and No. 2 Journals:  0.064-0.099 mm (0.00252-0.00390 in) 
    No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 Journals:  0.060-0.099 mm (0.00236-0.00390 in) 
    Service Limit:  0.150 mm (0.00591 in) 
    No. 2 Journal:  0.064-0.099 mm (0.00252-0.00390 in) 
    No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 Journals:  0.060-0.099 mm (0.00236-0.00390 in) 
    Service Limit:  0.150 mm (0.00591 in) 
    Intake Camshaft-to-Holder Oil Clearance 
    Standard (New): 
    No. 1 Journal:  0.034-0.069 mm (0.00134-0.00272 in)

    9. Check the total runout with the camshaft supported on V-blocks:
    • If the total runout of the camshaft is within the standard, replace the cylinder head.
    • If the total runout is beyond the standard, replace the camshaft and recheck the camshaft-to-holder oil clearance. If the oil clearance is still beyond the standard, replace the cylinder head.
    Camshaft Total Runout 
    Standard (New):  0.03 mm (0.0012 in) max.

    10. Measure cam lobe height.

    Cam Lobe Height Standard (New): 

    PRI: Primary MID: Mid SEC: Secondary
    C/C: Cam Chain  
      INTAKE EXHAUST
    PRI 35.555 mm (1.39980 in)  35.095 mm (1.38169 in) 
    MID 35.874 mm (1.41236 in) 
    SEC 35.555 mm (1.39980 in) 

Rocker Arm-to-Shaft Clearance Inspection 

  1. Rocker Arm and Shaft - Inspect

    1. Measure the diameter of the shaft at the first rocker location.

    2. Zero the gauge (A) to the shaft diameter.

    3. Measure the inside diameter of the rocker arm, and check it for an out-of-round condition.

    Rocker Arm-to-Shaft Clearance 
    Standard (New): 
    Intake:  0.018-0.059 mm (0.00071-0.00232 in) 
    Service Limit:  0.080 mm (0.00315 in)

    4. Repeat for all rocker arms and both shafts. If the clearance is beyond the service limit, replace the rocker shaft and all out of service limit rocker arms. If any VTEC rocker arm needs replacement, replace the rocker arms (primary, mid, and secondary), as a set.

    1. Inspect the rocker arm pistons (A). Push on each piston manually. If it does not move smoothly, replace the rocker arm set.
    NOTE:  Apply new engine oil to the rocker arm pistons when reassembling.

Valve Inspection 

  1. Valve - Inspect

    1. Measure the valve in these areas.

    Intake Valve Dimensions 

    A Standard (New):  32.85-33.15 mm (1.2933-1.3051 in) 
    B Standard (New):  109.45-110.05 mm (4.3090-4.3327 in) 
    C Standard (New):  5.475-5.490 mm (0.21555-0.21614 in) 
    C Service Limit:  5.450 mm (0.21457 in) 

    Exhaust Valve Dimensions 

    A Standard (New):  25.90-26.10 mm (1.0197-1.0276 in) 
    B Standard (New):  95.50-95.90 mm (3.7598-3.7756 in) 
    C Standard (New):  5.450-5.460 mm (0.21457-0.21496 in) 
    C Service Limit:  5.420 mm (0.21339 in)

Valve Stem-to-Guide Clearance Inspection 

  1. Valve Stem-to-Guide Clearance - Inspect

    1. Subtract the O.D. of the valve stem, measured with a micrometer, from the I.D. of the valve guide, measured with an inside micrometer or ball gauge. Take the measurements in three places along the valve stem and three places inside the valve guide. The difference between the largest valve guide measurement and the smallest valve stem measurement should not exceed the service limit.

    Intake Valve Stem-to-Guide Clearance 

    Standard (New):  0.020-0.055 mm (0.00079-0.00217 in) 
    Service Limit:  0.080 mm (0.00315 in) 

    Exhaust Valve Stem-to-Guide Clearance 

    Standard (New):  0.050-0.080 mm (0.00197-0.00315 in) 
    Service Limit:  0.110 mm (0.00433 in)

Cylinder Head Inspection for Warpage 

  1. Cylinder Head Warpage - Inspect

    1. Check the cylinder head for warpage. Measure along the edges, and three ways across the center:

    • If warpage is less than 0.05 mm (0.0020 in) cylinder head resurfacing is not required.
    • Maximum resurface limited to the cylinder head height standard as shown.
