DTC P171A
DTC P171A : Park Pawl System Position Control Error
General Description
The park pawl actuator driver unit controls the park pawl actuator to switch to and unlock the P position/mode by the command from the powertrain control module (PCM). If the position sensor in the park pawl actuator driver unit detects a change to the P position by a factor of such as applying external force to the transmission, while the switch/unlock command to the P position is not being transmitted to the park pawl actuator driver unit from the PCM, the PCM receives a malfunction from the park pawl actuator driver unit and stores a DTC.

Possible Cause
NOTE: The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
- Park pawl actuator failure
- Parking mechanism failure
Confirmation Procedure
Operating Condition
- Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait for at least 10 seconds.
- While pressing the brake pedal, shift the transmission to N, D, and R position/mode, then shift the transmission to P position/mode and wait at least 5 seconds.
With the HDS
None.
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected, the shift position indicator blinks and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data are stored in the PCM memory. The MIL does not come on.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The shift position indicator comes off by turning the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode. The Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool Clear command or by disconnecting the 12 volt battery.
