General Description

Engine resonance has the potential to cause severe engine damage. As a result, the flywheel is equipped with a high rate spring to help smooth out the transmission of power between the engine and the generator motor. However, there are still certain rpm levels where resonance can cause vibration. When resonance is detected by the powertrain control module (PCM), the rpm range is limited. There are also cases that resonance is caused by a misfire which can lead to an engine or generator motor failure.
