The powertrain control module (PCM) calculates the target drive force from the accelerator pedal inputs, external demands, and auxiliary load information, and calculates the allowable drive force until the acceleration state leads to a hazardous event for the target drive force. Abnormal accelerations are detected by the relations of the target drive force, the allowable drive force, and the converted drive force value of each torque command value.

Acceleration monitor
There are two methods to detect abnormal accelerations; time judgment method and integration judgment method. If both of the methods are judged abnormal, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

  Time judgment method:
  
  Malfunction is established if the estimated drive force is higher than the target drive force for a specified time. The allowable time changes depending on the difference width between the estimated drive force and the allowable drive force.

  Integration judgment method:
  
  Malfunction is established if the integration value of drive force difference exceeds a threshold.
Deceleration monitor
Deceleration monitor judges as same way as the acceleration monitor but with the negative drive force (minus sign).
Different run monitor
Malfunction is established if the vehicle drives opposite drive force to the driver's demand, or unintended vehicle start occurs at N position/mode for a specified time.

Both conditions are met:

The estimated drive force is higher than the target drive force for a specified time. The allowable time changes depending on the difference width between the estimated drive force and the allowable drive force.
The integration value of drive force difference exceeds a threshold.

DTC: P1A53

The vehicle drives opposite drive force to the driver's demand or unintended vehicle start occurs at N position/mode.

Diagnosis Details

Conditions for setting the DTC

When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC and the freeze data are stored in the PCM memory.

Conditions for clearing the DTC

The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool Clear command or by disconnecting the 12 volt battery.
