DTC P0480 : RFC System Malfunction

DTC (PGM-FI)
- Problem verification
-1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-3. Select the RADIATOR FAN in the Function Test Menu with the HDS.
RADIATOR FAN
Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description Confirmed DTC Pending DTC P0480 RFC System Malfunction Is DTC P0480 indicated?
YES
The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.
NO
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the RFC unit, the RFC relay, and the PCM. If the on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the on-board snapshot .
- Fan shroud assembly visual check
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
Check for these conditions at the fan shroud assembly:
- Interference with fan shroud
- Debris in the fan
- Ice on the fan blades
- Broken or deformed radiator fan
- Broken or deformed fan shroud
Are the conditions OK?
YES
Go to step 3.
NO
- Fuse check 1
-1. Check the following fuse.
Fuse No. C1-5 Is the fuse OK?
YES
Go to step 7.
NO
Go to step 4.
- Shorted wire check (+B_MAIN_FAN line)
-1. Remove the blown No. C1-5 fuse .
-2. Remove the RFC relay .
-3. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode RFC relay: disconnected Test point 1 RFC relay 4P socket (female terminals) No. 1: Test point 2 Body ground Is there 1 MΩ or more?
YES
The +B_MAIN_FAN wire is OK. Go to step 5.
NO
Repair a short in the +B_MAIN_FAN wire between the No. C1-5 fuse and the RFC relay. Also replace the No. C1-5 fuse.
- Shorted wire check (MAIN_FAN_MOTOR line)
-1. Disconnect the following connector.
RFC unit connector A (2P) -2. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode RFC relay: disconnected RFC unit connector A (2P): disconnected Test point 1 RFC relay 4P socket (female terminals) No. 2: Test point 2 Body ground Is there 1 MΩ or more?
YES
The MAIN_FAN_MOTOR wire is OK. Go to step 6.
NO
Repair a short in the MAIN_FAN_MOTOR wire between the RFC relay and the RFC unit. Also replace the No. C1-5 fuse .
- Relay check
-1. Test the RFC relay .
Is the relay OK?
YES
Replace the No. C1-5 fuse , then recheck. If the fuse is blown again, replace the RFC unit .
NO
Replace the RFC relay.
- Determine possible failure area (RFC relay control circuit, others)
-1. Jump the SCS line with the HDS, and wait more than 1 minute.
-2. Disconnect the following connector.
PCM connector A (50P) -3. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected Test point 1 PCM connector A (50P) No. 18 Test point 2 Body ground Is there battery voltage?
YES
Go to step 12.
NO
Go to step 8.
- Open wire check (FAN_LO_SIGNAL line)
-1. Disconnect the following connector.
Relay circuit board connector A (8P) -2. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected Relay circuit board connector A (8P): disconnected Test point 1 Relay circuit board connector A (8P) (female terminals) No. 2: Test point 2 PCM connector A (50P) No. 18 Is there 1.0 Ω or less?
YES
The FAN_LO_SIGNAL wire is OK. Go to step 9.
NO
Repair an open in the FAN_LO_SIGNAL wire between the PCM (A18) and the relay circuit board.
- Open wire check (FAN_LO_SIGNAL_CL- line)
-1. Remove the RFC relay .
-2. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected Relay circuit board connector A (8P): disconnected RFC relay: disconnected Test point 1 RFC relay 4P socket (female terminals) No. 4: Test point 2 Relay circuit board connector A (8P) (female terminals) No. 1: Is there 1.0 Ω or less?
YES
The FAN_LO_SIGNAL_CL- wire is OK. Go to step 10.
NO
Repair an open in the FAN_LO_SIGNAL_CL- wire between the relay circuit board and the RFC relay.
- Relay check
-1. Test the RFC relay .
Is the relay OK?
YES
Go to step 11.
NO
Replace the RFC relay.
- Fuse check 2
-1. Check the following fuse.
Fuse No. A16 Is the fuse OK?
YES
Repair an open in the +B_RFC_RLY_COIL+ wire between the No. A16 fuse and the RFC relay. If the wire is OK, replace the relay circuit board .
NO
Repair a short in the +B_RFC_RLY_COIL+ wire between the No. A16 fuse and the RFC relay. Also replace the No. A16 fuse.
- Shorted wire check (FAN_CONTROL line)
-1. Disconnect the following connector.
RFC unit connector B (3P) -2. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected RFC unit connector B (3P): disconnected Test point 1 PCM connector A (50P) No. 17 Test point 2 Body ground Is there 1 MΩ or more?
YES
The FAN_CONTROL wire is not shorted. Go to step 13.
NO
Repair a short in the FAN_CONTROL wire between the PCM (A17) and the RFC unit.
- Open wire check (FAN_CONTROL line)
-1. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected RFC unit connector B (3P): disconnected Test point 1 RFC unit connector B (3P) (female terminals) No. 1: Test point 2 PCM connector A (50P) No. 17 Is there 1.0 Ω or less?
YES
The FAN_CONTROL wire is OK. Go to step 14.
NO
Repair an open in the FAN_CONTROL wire between the PCM (A17) and the RFC unit.
- Open wire check (+B_MAIN_FAN line)
-1. Remove the RFC relay .
-2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode PCM connector A (50P): disconnected RFC unit connector B (3P): disconnected RFC relay: disconnected Test point 1 RFC relay 4P socket (female terminals) No. 1: Test point 2 Body ground Is there battery voltage?
YES
The +B_MAIN_FAN wire is OK. Go to step 15.
NO
Repair an open in the +B_MAIN_FAN wire between the No. C1-5 fuse and the RFC relay.
- Relay check
-1. Test the RFC relay .
Is the relay OK?
YES
Go to step 16.
NO
Replace the RFC relay.
- Open wire check (MAIN_FAN_MOTOR line)
-1. Reinstall the RFC relay .
-2. Reconnect PCM connector A (50P).
-3. Exit the SCS mode with the HDS.
-4. Disconnect the following connector.
RFC unit connector A (2P) -5. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-6. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle ON mode RFC unit connector B (3P): disconnected RFC unit connector A (2P): disconnected Test point 1 RFC unit connector A (2P) (female terminals) No. 1: Test point 2 Body ground Is there battery voltage?
YES
The MAIN_FAN_MOTOR wire is OK. Go to step 17.
NO
Repair an open in the MAIN_FAN_MOTOR wire between the RFC relay and the RFC unit.
- Open wire check (GND line)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode RFC unit connector B (3P): disconnected RFC unit connector A (2P): disconnected Test point 1 RFC unit connector A (2P) (female terminals) No. 2: Test point 2 Body ground Is there 1.0 Ω or less?
YES
The GND wire is OK. Go to step 18.
NO
Repair an open in the GND wire between the RFC unit and G351.
- RFC unit check
-1. Substitute a known-good RFC unit .
-2. Reconnect all connectors.
-3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-5. Select the RADIATOR FAN in the Function Test Menu with the HDS.

Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

YES
Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good PCM .
NO
