Replace
  1. Transfer Oil Seal - Install
    GHH374842Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.
    1. Install the transfer oil seal (A) to a depth (B) of 4.5-5.5 mm (0.177-0.217 in) below the transfer housing surface (C) using the 15 x 135L driver handle and the 58 mm oil seal driver attachment.
NOTE:  Apply a light coat of clean ATF to the oil seal surface of the press-fit part before installation.
  2. Transfer Spacer - Install

NOTE:  Make sure the transfer spacer is installed in the correct direction.

  3. Thrust Washer - Install
  4. Transfer Hypoid Driven Gear - Install
  5. Companion Flange - Install
  6. Back-Up Ring - Install
  7. Conical Spring Washer - Install

NOTE:  Make sure the conical spring washer is installed in the correct direction.

  8. Locknut - Install

    1. Secure the transfer housing (A) in a bench vise (B).

NOTE:  To prevent damaging, always use wood blocks (C) or equivalent materials between the transfer housing and the bench vise.

    2. Loosely install the locknut.

    3. Rotate the companion flange several turns to seat the tapered roller bearings.

    4. Set the companion holder on the companion flange.

    5. Tighten the locknut while measuring the starting torque of the transfer hypoid driven gear tapered roller bearing so the starting torque is within the specified torque. Tighten the locknut to the lower torque specification, then check the starting torque. If the starting torque is low, increase the torque on the locknut until the starting torque is acceptable.

    NOTE:

    • If the starting torque exceeds the specified torque, replace the transfer spacer and reassemble the parts. Do not adjust the torque with the locknut loose.
    • If the tightening torque exceeds the specified torque and the starting torque is below the specified torque, replace the transfer spacer and reassemble the parts.

    6. Remove the companion holder.

    Starting Torque:
    0.98-1.39 N.m (10.0-14.2 kgf.cm, 8.7-12.3 lbf.in)

    7. Stake the locknut to a depth (A) of at least 0.7 mm (0.028 in) using a 3.0-3.5 mm (0.118-0.138 in) punch (B).
NOTE:  Be careful not to crack the locknut when staking.
  9. Stud Bolt - Install
  10. Transfer Driven Gear - Install
    GHH374845Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.
    1. Install the transfer driven gear (A) using the 32.5 mm driver and a press.
NOTE:  Make sure the transfer driven gear is installed in the correct direction.
  11. Washer - Install
    GHH374846Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.
    1. Install the washer (A) using the 32.5 mm driver and a press.
NOTE:  Make sure the washer is installed in the correct direction.
  12. Locknut - Install
    GHH374847Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.
    1. Secure the transfer hypoid drive gear/shaft assembly (A) in a bench vise (B) with hex wrench (C).

    2. Install the locknut.

    3. Stake the locknut to a depth (A) of at least 0.7 mm (0.028 in) using a 3.0-3.5 mm (0.118-0.138 in) punch (B).
NOTE:  Be careful not to crack the locknut when staking.

    4. Secure the transfer hypoid drive gear/shaft assembly (A) in a bench vise (B).

NOTE:  To prevent damaging, always use wood blocks (C) or equivalent materials between the transfer hypoid drive gear/shaft assembly and the bench vise.

    5. Rotate the transfer driven gear (D) several turns to seat the tapered roller bearings.

    6. Measure the starting torque of the transfer hypoid drive gear tapered roller bearing using the torque wrench (E) and a socket (F).

    7. If the starting torque is out of the specification, replace the transfer hypoid drive gear/shaft assembly.

    Starting Torque:
    1.63-5.23 N.m (16.6-53.4 kgf.cm, 14.4-46.3 lbf.in)
  13. Transfer Hypoid Gear Tooth Contact Pattern - Check
  14. Transfer Hypoid Drive Gear/Shaft Assembly - Install
  15. Total Starting Torque - Check
  16. Transfer Gear Backlash - Check
