Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System Description

Overview

The acoustic vehicle alerting system consists of the acoustic vehicle alerting control unit, and the acoustic vehicle alerting speaker. At low speeds, the normal operating sounds of this vehicle is low, so it is equipped with an acoustic vehicle alerting system to inform pedestrians and others of its approach. When the acoustic vehicle alerting system failure occurs, a warning message is displayed in the multi-information display (MID).

Sound Operation

The acoustic vehicle alerting system only functions under these conditions:

Vehicle in the READY TO DRIVE mode.
Transmission shifted to other than P position/mode.
Vehicle driving forward and backward in EV driving mode.
Vehicle speed above 0.3 mph (0.5 km/h).

If these conditions are not met, the system makes no sound. The pitch of the alert sound varies with the vehicle's speed.

The sound stops when the vehicle speed exceeds about 16 mph (25 km/h), or when the vehicle stops. The sound resumes when the vehicle speed falls below about 14 mph (22 km/h).
