Transfer Assembly Removal, Installation, and Inspection: Inspection
NOTE: How to read the torque specifications .
Transfer Gear Backlash Measurement
- Vehicle - Lift
- Neutral Position Holding Mode - Enter
NOTE: Even if the negative terminal of the 12 volt battery is disconnected after the neutral position holding mode is actuated, the vehicle continues to keep the N position.
- 12 Volt Battery Terminal - Disconnect
- Engine Undercover - Remove
- Propeller Shaft - Remove
- Transfer Gear Backlash - Check
1. Temporarily install the transfer companion flange setting nut (A). 2. Set a dial indicator (B) on the transfer companion flange setting nut as shown.
NOTE: Position the dial indicator tip (C) on the direct extension of the nut center (D).
3. Measure the transfer gear backlash.
4. If the transfer gear backlash is out of the standard, replace the transfer assembly.
Standard: 0.06-0.16 mm (0.0024-0.0063 in) - All Removed Parts - Install
1. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal. Fluid Leak Check
- Vehicle - Lift
- Engine Undercover - Remove
- Fluid Leak - Check
Transmission (e-CVT) Side
1. Check for fluid leaks between the mating faces of the transfer assembly and the transmission (e-CVT).
2. If there is leak:
- Replace the O-ring between the transfer assembly and the transmission (e-CVT).
- Replace the O-ring between the transfer housing and the transfer hypoid drive gear/shaft assembly .
Propeller Shaft Side
1. Check for fluid leaks at the transfer companion flange.
2. If there is leak, replace the transfer oil seal and the O-ring
.
- All Removed Parts - Install
1. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal. Total Starting Torque Measurement
- Total Starting Torque - Check
1. Secure the transfer assembly (A) in a bench vise (B). NOTE: To prevent damaging, always use wood blocks (C) or equivalent materials between the transfer housing and the bench vise.
2. Rotate the companion flange (D) several turns to seat the tapered roller bearings.
3. Measure the total starting torque at the companion flange using a torque wrench (E) and a socket (F).
4. If the total starting torque is out of the standard, replace the transfer assembly.
Standard: 2.85-7.40 N.m (29.1-75.6 kgf.cm, 25.2-65.5 lbf.in) Transfer Hypoid Gear Tooth Contact Pattern Check
- Transfer Hypoid Gear Tooth Contact Pattern - Check
Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.
1. Remove the transfer hypoid drive gear/shaft assembly (A) with the dowel pin (B) and the O-ring (C). 2. Apply Prussian Blue to both sides of the transfer hypoid drive gear teeth lightly and evenly.
3. Temporarily install the transfer hypoid drive gear/shaft assembly with the dowel pin and the old O-ring.
4. Rotate the companion flange in both directions until the transfer hypoid drive gear rotates one full turn.
5. Remove the transfer hypoid drive gear/shaft assembly with the dowel pin and the O-ring.
6. Check the transfer hypoid gear tooth contact pattern. 7. If the transfer hypoid gear tooth contact pattern is incorrect, replace the transfer assembly.
