Steering Gearbox Removal and Installation: Removal: Procedure

  1. 12 Volt Battery Terminal - Disconnect
  2. Vehicle - Lift
  3. Front Wheels - Remove
  4. Steering Joint - Disconnect 
  5. Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Disconnect (Both Sides) 
  6. Engine Undercover - Remove
  7. Connectors (EPS Motor/Control Unit) - Disconnect

    1. Disconnect the connector (A) by pushing the lock (B) and the lever (C) up in the numbered sequence shown.

    2. Disconnect the connector (D).

    NOTE:  Wrap the connectors with vinyl tape to avoid contamination from grease or water.

  8. Stabilizer Link - Disconnect
    1. Disconnect both sides of the stabilizer link from the stabilizer bar .
  9. Front Lower Arm - Disconnect
    1. Disconnect both sides of the front lower arm from the ball joints .
  10. Exhaust Pipe A - Remove
  11. Lower Torque Rod Mounting Bolt - Remove
  12. Front Subframe - Lift Down

    1. Remove both sides of the front lower arm mounting bolt (A) from the body.

    2. Set the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) on a transmission jack (A), line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, and tighten the bolts.

    3. Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe (B).

    4. Remove the front subframe mounting bolts .

    5. Lower the front subframe until dropped from the body.

    NOTE:  Do not lower the front subframe more than required.

  13. Pinion Shaft Grommet - Remove
  14. Steering Gearbox - Remove

    1. Remove the steering gearbox (A) from the front subframe (B).

    2. Carefully rotate the steering gearbox so that the top of the pinion shaft points towards the front of the vehicle.

    3. Remove the steering gearbox (A) through the wheelwell opening on the driver's side.

    NOTE:  Be careful not to damage the steering gearbox.

  15. Heat Baffle - Remove
  16. EPS Harness - Remove
