HandsFreeLink System Description

The HandsFreeLink (HFL) automatically connects (pairs) to a linked phone when the vehicle is in the ACCESSORY or ON mode. The HFL also synchronizes with the paired cell phone's phone book to automatically update any changes. Depending on the functions of the cell phone, the automatic update may not work.

HandsFreeLink Control Unit 

The audio-navigation unit or the audio unit has the HFL circuit and the Bluetooth® transceiver. The HFL microphone in the roof console is connected directly to the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit. The HFL functions are controlled by the HFL switch.

Diagnostic Function 

The audio-navigation unit or the audio unit can check the HFL system components by the System Diagnostic Mode:

Pairing a Cell Phone 

The audio-navigation unit or the audio unit can be paired with a Honda approved cell phone by Bluetooth® communication. Pairing procedures vary by the connection history and Bluetooth version of the cell phone. Refer to the Owner's Manual.

When the Bluetooth® cell phone that supports PBAP and AT Command is connected, the phone book data in the cell phone is transferred to the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit automatically. A function to delete an item in the phone book is not supported.

General Operation 

The HFL switch on the steering wheel is used to answer incoming calls, to make outgoing calls, or to end a call.

The HFL switch signal is sent to the gauge control module using a serial bus (LIN), then the signal is sent to the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit using the B-CAN. The HFL information is sent to the gauge control module to display on the multi-information display (MID) using the dedicated digital signal line (LVDS2).

The HFL microphone picks up the driver's voice, and sends the signal to the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit. The signal is then sent from the Bluetooth® module to the cell phone.

The caller's voice signal is sent from the cell phone to the Bluetooth® transceiver. The audio-navigation unit or the audio unit outputs the voice signal through the front door speakers.

Muting Logic 

When you are talking on the cell phone using the HFL system, the front speakers provide the HFL sound and the rear speakers are muted. Refer to the Audio System Description for muting signal logic with the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit.

Voice Tag Function (Display Audio type) 

The audio-navigation unit or the audio unit can store voice tag on the memory for making a HFL call by voice recognition possible. The voice tag stored on the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit is related with Speed Dial.

Voice Control Function 

The audio unit has voice recognition function about the HFL. Using the TALK button on the steering wheel to activate the voice control. The customer can make a call by talking a number or a contact name*. As for vehicles with navigation, the audio-navigation unit controls the HFL by the navigation voice control system.

Fan Mute Operation 

When the voice recognition is in use, the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit sends the fan mute signal to the climate control unit using the B-CAN. The blower fan operating voltage may be reduced depending on the current fan speed.

Text/e-Mail (Display Audio Type) 

The audio-navigation unit or the audio unit processes the short message service (SMS) data sent from the cell phone. When the Bluetooth® cell phone that supports Message Access Profile (MAP) is connected, the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit processes the Multimedia message service (MMS) and the e-Mail data sent from the cell phone.

The text message information is displayed on the center display unit. Also, the MID in the gauge control module displays the Text/e-Mail status by pop-up screen.

The audio-navigation unit or the audio unit can read out the text message using the Text-to-Speech (TTS) engine. The voice outputs to driver's and front passenger's speakers.

Operation Restriction 

The audio-navigation unit or the audio unit has a function that restricts certain operation of HFL system that may affect safe driving.

HFL Switch 

The HFL switch and the audio remote switch are integrated to the audio remote-HFL switch. Refer to the Audio System Description .

HFL Microphone 

The HFL microphone receives voice command or HFL speech, and transmits them to the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit.

Array Microphone 

The HFL microphone consist of two microphones. These microphones detects the driver's voice and the passenger's voice separately.

For display audio type, the microphone is switching the directivity by the voltage change on the HFT MUTE line.

HFL/NAVI voice recognition mode When using the HFL voice tag function, HFL voice control function, or the navigation voice recognition function that is embedded into the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit, this mode suppresses noises from the passenger's side to achieve the voice recognition enhancement. 0 - 1.5 V
HFL telephone mode When using the HandsFreeLink via the audio-navigation unit or the audio unit, this mode achieves low-latency using digital processing to voice signal from bidirectional microphones. 3 - 5 V
Server voice recognition mode When using the voice recognition system via an external device (like smartphone), this mode suppresses background noise to achieve the voice recognition enhancement. 7 - 9.5 V
