DTC P0299 (1.5 L Engine)

DTC P0299  : Turbocharger Underboost Problem

NOTE:  Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information .

P0299 Turbocharger Underboost Problem    

DTC (PGM-FI)

  1. Problem verification

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    -2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    -3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    -4. Start the engine.

    -5. Hold the engine speed at 3, 000 rpm without load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on.

    -6. Test-drive the vehicle under the same conditions with the on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded.

    -7. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    P0299 Turbocharger Underboost Problem    

    Is DTC P0299 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 2.

    NO 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the turbocharger and the PCM. If the on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the on-board snapshot .

  2. Air cleaner check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    -2. Inspect the air cleaner element .

    Is the air cleaner element clogged?

    YES 

    Replace the air cleaner element .

    NO 

    Go to step 3.

  3. Check for leak or damage components

    -1. Check for leak or damage parts through the intake air duct to the throttle body.

    Are the parts OK?

    YES 

    Go to step 4.

    NO 

    Repair or replace the damaged parts.

  4. Check for EVAP canister purge line:

    Visually inspect each of the components below for disconnected hoses, cracks, or damage:

    • Non-return valve A (A) (built into the EVAP canister purge valve)
    • Non-return valve B (B) (built into the EVAP canister purge valve)
    • EVAP canister purge valve (C)
    • Hose (D)

    Are any components disconnected or damaged?

    YES 

    Repair the connection or replace the damaged part (s).

    NO 

    Go to step 5.

  5. Check for EVAP canister purge valve

    -1. Inspect the EVAP canister purge valve .

    Is the EVAP canister purge valve OK?

    YES 

    Go to step 6.

    NO 

    Replace the EVAP canister purge valve .

  6. Turbocharger bypass control solenoid valve operation check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    -2. Select the TC BYPASS CONTROL SOL. V TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.

    Is there a clicking noise from the turbocharger bypass solenoid valve?

    YES 

    Go to step 7.

    NO 

    Replace the turbocharger bypass control solenoid valve .

  7. Check for turbocharger bypass control valve control line

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    Visually inspect each of the components below for disconnected hoses, blockage, or damage:

    • Hose (A) between the turbocharger bypass control solenoid valve and the intake manifold
    • Hose (B) between the turbocharger bypass control solenoid valve and the turbocharger bypass control valve
    • Hose (C) between turbocharger bypass control solenoid valve and the turbocharger joint

    Are any components disconnected, blockage, or damaged?

    YES 

    Repair the connection or replace the damaged part (s).

    NO 

    Go to step 8.

  8. Turbocharger bypass control solenoid valve check

    -1. Inspect the turbocharger bypass control solenoid valve .

    Is the solenoid valve OK?

    YES 

    Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Replace the turbocharger bypass control solenoid valve .

  9. Turbocharger bypass control valve check

    -1. Inspect the turbocharger bypass control valve .

    Is the valve OK?

    YES 

    Go to step 10.

    NO 

    Replace the turbocharger joint .

  10. Turbocharger wastegate control actuator check

    -1. Select the ELECTRIC WASTE GATE in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.

    Visually inspect the operation of the turbocharger wastegate control actuator.

    Does the turbocharger wastegate control actuator operate?

    1. YES 

      • Check for clogging or damaged in these parts.
        • -

          Turbocharger

        • -

          Catalytic converter

      • Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good PCM .

      NO 

      Replace the turbocharger .
