Engine Removal and Installation (1.5 L Engine): Removal

NOTE: 

  1. Hood - Wide Open

    1. Open the hood.

    2. Remove and relocate the hood support rod (A) to the wide-open positions (B) and secure the hood.

  2. Fuel Pressure - Relieve
  3. Front Bulkhead Cover - Remove
  4. 12 Volt Battery - Remove
  5. 12 Volt Battery Base - Remove
  6. Intake Parts - Remove
  7. Connector (Engine Wire Harness) and Positive Cable (Under-Hood Fuse/Relay Box) - Disconnect

    1. Remove the cables (A).

    2. Disconnect the connectors (B).

    3. Remove the harness clips (C).

    4. Remove the harness holder (D).

    5. Remove the harness clamp (E).

  8. Throttle Body Inlet Pipe - Remove
  9. Shift Cable (Transmission Side) - Disconnect
  10. Fuel Feed Hose - Disconnect
  11. Steering Joint - Disconnect

    NOTE:  Hold the steering wheel with the steering wheel holder tool.

  12. Vehicle - Lift
    1. Raise and support the vehicle .
  13. Front Wheel - Remove
  14. Engine Undercover - Remove
  15. Engine Coolant - Drain
  16. Engine Oil - Drain
  17. Transmission Fluid - Drain
  18. Drive Belt - Remove
  19. Radiator Assembly - Remove
  20. A/C Compressor - Move

    NOTE: 

    • Do not disconnect the suction hose and the discharge hose.
    • Do not bend the suction hose and the discharge hose excessively.
    • Hang the A/C compressor with a wire tie.
  21. Connector (EPS Subharness) - Disconnect
  22. Exhaust Pipe A - Remove
  23. Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Disconnect
  24. Front Stabilizer Link Ball Joint - Disconnect
  25. Lower Arm Ball Joint - Disconnect
  26. Front Driveshaft - Remove
  27. Propeller Shaft - Remove (AWD)
  28. Transfer Assembly - Remove (AWD)
  29. Vehicle - Lift
    1. Lower the vehicle.
  30. Expansion Tank - Remove
  31. Intercooler Inlet Hose, EVAP Canister Purge Hose, Heater Hose and Water Bypass Hose - Disconnect

    1. Disconnect the intercooler inlet hose (A), the EVAP canister purge hose (B), the water bypass hose (C) and the heater hoses (D).

  32. Vehicle - Lift
    1. Raise the vehicle.
  33. Lower Torque Rod - Remove 
  34. Front Lower Arm Mounting Bolt - Remove

    1. Remove both sides of the front lower arm mounting bolt from the body .
  35. Front Subframe - Support

    1. Set the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) on a transmission jack (A), line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, and tighten the bolts.

    2. Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe (B).

  36. Front Subframe - Remove
  37. Vehicle - Lift
    1. Lower the vehicle.
  38. Engine - Support
    1. Lift and support the engine with a jack and a wood block under the oil pan.
  39. Upper Torque Rod - Remove 
  40. Side Engine Mount - Remove
  41. Universal Lifting Eyelet - Install

  42. Chain Hoist - Install

    1. Attach a chain hoist (A) to the universal lifting eyelet and the transmission hanger (B), then lift the engine/transmission until it is securely supported by the chain hoist.

  43. Transmission Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt and Nut - Remove

  44. Engine - Remove
    1. Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the fuel hoses, the coolant hoses, and the electrical wiring.

    2. Slowly lower the engine/transmission about 150 mm (5.91 in). Check once again that all the hoses and the electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.

    3. Remove the chain hoist from the engine/transmission.

    4. Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/transmission from under the vehicle.
