Paddle Shifter Circuit Troubleshooting (2019 2020 2021)

Paddle Shifter Circuit Troubleshooting 

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations - Refer to: SRS Component Location Index (2016), or SRS Component Location Index (2017 2018 2019 2020 2021) and the precautions and procedures before doing repair or service.

NOTE:

Information marked with asterisk 1 (*1) applies to the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) circuit, and with asterisk 2 (*2) applies to the paddle shifter - (downshift switch) circuit.

  1. Problem verification

    - 1. Connect the HDS to the DLC.

    - 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 3. Check the parameter(s) below with the HDS when repeatedly pressing and releasing the paddle shifter.

    Shift up Switch on Steering    
    Shift down Switch on Steering    

    Is ON indicated when you are pressing the paddle shifter and OFF with the paddle shifter released?

    YES 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

    NO 

    The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.

  2. Determine possible failure area (TCM, others)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    TCM 58P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      TCM 58P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 TCM 58P connector No. 29 - Refer to: A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018), or A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019), or A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2020 2021), * 1
      TCM 58P connector No. 28 - Refer to: A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) or A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019), or A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2020 2021), * 2
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity when pressing the paddle shifter + (upshift switch)* 1/paddle shifter - (downshift switch)* 2 and no continuity when the paddle shifter + (upshift switch)* 1/paddle shifter - (downshift switch)* 2 is released?

    YES 

    The paddle shifter + (upshift switch) circuit* 1/paddle shifter - (downshift switch) circuit* 2 is OK. Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting or substitute a known-good TCM .

    NO 

    Go to step 3.

  3. Determine possible failure area (PADDLE SW UP line* 1/PADDLE SW DN line* 2, others):

    - 1.Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Remove the steering wheel.

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected
    Test point 1 Cable reel connector C (20P) (female terminals) No. 18* 1:
    Test point 2 Cable reel connector C (20P) (female terminals) No. 20* 1:
    Test point 1 Cable reel connector C (20P) (female terminals) No. 3* 2:
    Test point 2 Cable reel connector C (20P) (female terminals) No. 19* 2:

    Is there continuity when pressing the paddle shifter + (upshift switch)* 1/paddle shifter - (downshift switch)* 2 and no continuity when the paddle shifter + (upshift switch)* 1/paddle shifter - (downshift switch)* 2 is released?

    YES 

    Go to step 5.

    NO 

    Go to step 4.

  4. Paddle shifter operation check

    - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

    Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1
    Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2

    - 2. Test the paddle shifter.

    Is the paddle shifter OK?

    YES 

    The paddle shifter is OK. Replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018) or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2019 2020 2021) .

    NO 

    Replace the paddle shifter .

  5. Open wire check (HORN GND line)

    - 1. Remove the cable reel.

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Cable reel connector A (20P): disconnected
      Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected
      TCM 58P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 6* 1:
      Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 7* 2:
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The HORN GND wire is OK. Go to step 6.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the HORN GND wire between the cable reel and ground (G401), or repair poor ground (G401).

  6. Shorted wire check (SUPP line* 1, SDNP line* 2):

    - 1.Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Cable reel connector A (20P): disconnected
      Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected
      TCM 58P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 8* 1:
      Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 18* 2:
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Repair a short to ground in the SUPP wire* 1/SDNP wire* 2 between the cable reel and the TCM.

    NO 

    The SUPP wire* 1/SDNP wire* 2 is not shorted. Go to step 7.

  7. Determine possible failure area (cable reel, others)

    - 1. Reconnect TCM 58P connector.

    - 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 3. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle ON mode
      Cable reel connector A (20P): disconnected
      Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected
    Test point 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 6* 1:
    Test point 2 Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 8* 1:
    Test point 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 7* 2:
    Test point 2 Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 18* 2:

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    Replace the cable reel .

    NO 

    Go to step 8.

  8. Open wire check (SUPP line* 1, SDNP line* 2):

    - 1.Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    TCM 58P connector

    - 3. Connect terminals A and B with a jumper wire.

    Terminals A Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 8* 1:
      Cable reel connector A (20P) (female terminals) No. 18* 2:
    Terminals B Body ground

    - 4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      Cable reel connector A (20P): disconnected
      Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected
      TCM 58P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 TCM 58P connector No. 29 - Refer to: A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) or A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019), or A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2020 2021), * 1
      TCM 58P connector No. 28 - Refer to: A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2016 2017 2018) or A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2019), or A/T Control System Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2020 2021), * 2
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections and loose terminals at the TCM. If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the freeze data/on-board snapshot.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the SUPP wire* 1/SDNP wire* 2 between the paddle shifter and the TCM.
