Cable Reel Replacement: Installation
- Before installing the steering wheel, make sure the front wheels are aligned straight ahead.
- If not already done, disconnect the negative cable from the 12 volt battery, then wait at least 3 minutes.
- Set the turn signal canceling sleeve (A) so that the tabs (B) are aligned vertically.

- Carefully install the cable reel (C) on the steering column shaft. Then connect the cable reel connector A (20P) and cable reel connector B (4P) to the cable reel.

- Install the upper and lower column covers (see
COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
).
- Before installing the steering wheel, make sure the front wheels are pointing ahead, then center the cable reel (A). Do this by first rotating the cable reel clockwise until it stops. Then rotate it counterclockwise (about three turns) until the arrow mark (B) on the cable reel label points straight up.

- Position the two tabs (A) of the turn signal canceling sleeve as shown, and install the steering wheel on to the steering column shaft, making sure the steering wheel hub (B) engages the pins (C) of the cable reel and tabs of the turn signal canceling sleeve. Do not tap on the steering wheel or steering column shaft when installing the steering wheel.

- Install the steering wheel bolt (A), and tighten it to the specified torque, then connect the cable reel connector C (20P) to the cable reel (B).

- Install the driver's airbag (see INSTALLATION
).
- Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure (see
12 VOLT BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION AND RECONNECTION
).
- Clear any DTCs with the HDS (see HOW TO CLEAR DTCS
).
- After installing the cable reel, confirm proper system operation:
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.
- Make sure the horn and turn signal switches work properly.
- Make sure the steering wheel switches work properly.
- After installation, check the steering wheel spoke angle. If the steering spoke angles to the right and left are not equal (steering wheel is not centered), correct the engagement of the steering wheel/column shaft splines.
