DTC U0038: IMA-CAN Malfunction (BUS-OFF); DTC U1205: IMA-CAN Malfunction (ECM/PCM-Motor Control Module (MCM))
- Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ).
- If DTC U0110 is stored at the same time as DTC U0038/U1205, troubleshoot that DTC first, then recheck for DTC U0038/U1205.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC U0038 or U1205 indicated?
YES -Go to step 6.
NO -Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the motor control module (MCM) and the ECM/PCM.
- Check for DTCs in the IMA system with the HDS.
Is DTC U0038 or U1205 indicated?
YES -Go to step 7.
NO -Go to step 38.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
- Disconnect ECM/PCM connector A (44P).
- Measure the resistance between ECM/PCM connector terminals A38 and A39.

Is there about 108-132 Ω?
YES -Go to step 22.
NO -
- Turn the battery module switch OFF.
- Remove the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Remove the PCU lid, the PCU busplate, and the PCU cover (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Disconnect motor control module (MCM) connector A (31P).

Is there about 1.0 Ω or less?
YES -Go to step 16.
NO -Repair an open in the wire between the ECM/PCM (A38) and the motor control module (MCM) (A2), then go to step 33.

Is there about 1.0 Ω or less?
YES -Replace the motor control module (MCM) (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), then go to step 33.
NO -Repair an open in the wire between the ECM/PCM (A39) and the motor control module (MCM) (A1), then go to step 33.
- Turn the battery module switch OFF.
- Remove the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Remove the PCU lid, the PCU busplate, and the PCU cover (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Disconnect motor control module (MCM) connector A (31P).
- Measure the resistance between ECM/PCM connector terminals A38 and A39.

Is there about 1.0 Ω or more?
YES -Replace the motor control module (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), then go to step 33.
NO -Repair a short in the wires between the ECM/PCM (A38) (IMA-CAN H line) arid the ECM/PCM (A39) (IMA-CAN L line), then go to step 33.
- Turn the battery module switch OFF.
- Remove the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Remove the PCU lid, the PCU busplate, and the PCU cover (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Disconnect motor control module (MCM) connector A (31P).
- Measure the resistance between body ground and ECM/PCM connector terminals A38 and A39 individually.

Is there about 1.0 Ω or more?
YES -Go to step 27.
NO -Repair a short to ground in the wire between the ECM/PCM (A38) and the motor control module (MCM) (A2) or between the ECM/PCM (A39) the and the motor control module (MCM) (A1), then go to step 33.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Measure the voltage between body ground and ECM/PCM connector terminals A38 and A39 individually.

Is there voltage?
YES -Repair a short to power in the wire between the ECM/PCM (A38) and the motor control module (MCM) (A2) or between the ECM/PCM (A39) and the motor control module (MCM) (A1), then go to step 32.
NO -Go to step 29.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Reconnect ECM/PCM connector A (44P).
- Measure the resistance between motor control module (MCM) connector terminals A1 and A2.

Is there about 108-132 Ω?
YES -Go to step 36.
NO -Replace the ECM/PCM (see ECM/PCM REPLACEMENT ), then go to step 33.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Reconnect all connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC U0038 or DTC U1205 indicated?
YES -Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the motor control module (MCM) and the ECM/PCM, then go to step 1.
NO -Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC'S TROUBLESHOOTING .
- Reconnect all connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Update the ECM/PCM if it does not have the latest software (see ELD REPLACEMENT ), or substitute a known-good ECM/PCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE ECM/PCM ).
- Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC U0038 or DTC U1205 indicated?
YES -Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the motor control module (MCM), and ECM/PCM. If the ECM/PCM was updated, substitute a known-good ECM/PCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE ECM/PCM ), then recheck. If the ECM/PCM was substituted, go to step 1.
NO -If the ECM/PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the ECM/PCM was substituted, replace the original ECM/PCM (see ECM/PCM REPLACEMENT ). If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC'S TROUBLESHOOTING .
