DTC B1170: Gauge Control Module Lost Communication With the VSA/ABS Modulator-Control Unit (VSA/ABS Message)

NOTE: If you are troubleshooting multiple DTCs, be sure to follow the instructions in B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A (see TROUBLESHOOTING - B-CAN SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS TEST MODE A ).
  1. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) and then back to ON (II).
  3. Wait for 6 seconds or more.
  4. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC B1170 indicated? 

    YES  -Go to step 5.

    NO  -Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for loose or poor connection between the gauge control module and the VSA modulator-control unit. ■

  5. Check for VSA System DTCs with the HDS (see HOW TO USE THE HDS (HONDA DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM) ).

    Are there any DTCs indicated? 

    YES  -Go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting, then recheck.

    NO  -Go to step 6.

  6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  7. Disconnect gauge control module connector B (14P).
  8. Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector.
  9. Check for continuity between gauge control module connector B (14P) terminals No. 1 and No. 8 and VSA modulator-control unit (46P) connector terminals No. 38 and No. 39 respectively.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Replace the VSA modulator-control unit (see VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ), and recheck. If the DTC is still present, replace the gauge control module (see GAUGE CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT ). ■

    NO  -Repair an open or high resistance in the wire. ■
