DTC B1187: Gauge Control Module Lost Communication With SRS Unit (SRS Message)

NOTE: If you are troubleshooting multiple DTCs, be sure to follow the instructions in B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A (see TROUBLESHOOTING - B-CAN SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS TEST MODE A ).

Clear the DTCs with the HDS.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) and then back to ON (II).
Wait for at least 6 seconds.
Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC B1187 indicated?

YES - Go to step 5.

NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for loose or poor connections.
From the system, select menu, select SRS.
Does the HDS communicate with the SRS unit?

YES - Go to step 6.

NO - Go to SRS indicator does not go off, and no DTCs are stored (see SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING ).
Check for DTCs in the SRS with the HDS.
Are any DTCs indicated?

YES - Go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting, then recheck.

NO - Go to step 7.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure (see BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION AND RECONNECTION ), then wait at least 3 minutes before starting work.
Disconnect the gauge control module 32P connector.
Disconnect SRS unit connector A (39P).
Check for continuity between gauge control module 32P connector terminals No. 29 and No. 30 and SRS unit connector A (39P) terminals No. 17 and No. 16 individually.

Is there continuity?

YES - Substitute a known-good SRS unit, and recheck. If the indication goes away, replace the original SRS unit. If the DTC is still present, replace the gauge control module (see GAUGE CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT ).

NO - Repair open in the wires.
