Before testing

Check to see if diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0720 (9) is indicated. If it is, troubleshoot and repair the DTC (see DTC P0720: PROBLEM IN OUTPUT SHAFT (COUNTERSHAFT) SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT ).
Inspect the No. 9 (10A) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box.
Check for continuity between the gauge assembly 14P connector C9 terminal and body ground (G502).

Raise the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
Disconnect gauge assembly 30P connector A.
Connect gauge assembly 30P connector A No. 27 terminal to the positive probe of a voltmeter, and connect the negative probe to body ground. To prevent damage to the gauge assembly, lay the gauge assembly on a shop towel.

Put the vehicle in neutral with the ignition switch ON (II).
Slowly rotate (over 3 mph (2 km/h) one wheel with the other wheel blocked.
Does voltage pulse from 0 to about 5 V or more?
1. YES - Inspect all connections, if all connections are OK, replace the gauge assembly.
2. NO - Turn the ignition switch OFF, and go to step 6.
Connect PCM 32P connector A No. 9 terminal to the positive probe of a voltmeter, and connect the negative probe to body ground.

Put the vehicle in neutral with the ignition switch ON (II).
Slowly rotate (over 3 MPH (2 km/h) one wheel with the other wheel blocked.
Does voltage pulse from 0 to about 5 V or more?
1. YES - Repair open in the BLU/WHT wire between the gauge assembly and the PCM.
2. NO - Turn the ignition switch OFF, and go to step 9.
Disconnect PCM 32P connector A, driver's multiplex control unit connector B, climate control unit connector B, (or heater control panel connector), gauge assembly 30P connector A, cruise control unit, and the navigation unit connector C (with navigation).
Check for continuity between No. 9 terminal and body ground.

Is there continuity?
1. YES - Repair short to ground in the BLU/WHT wire between the PCM and driver's multiplex control unit connector B, navigation connector C (with navigation), climate control unit connector B (or heater control panel connector), gauge assembly 30P connector A, or the cruise control unit.
2. NO - Check for these problems:
  - Bent, loose or corroded terminals.
  - A faulty PCM.
