Rear Brake Shoes: Inspection

NOTE:
For exploded view of brake drum components, see Fig 1.
- Check wheel cylinder for leakage. Check brake linings for cracking, glazing, wear, and contamination. Measure brake lining thickness. Measurement does not include brake shoe thickness. See BRAKESBRAKE SYSTEM SERVICE SPECIFICATIONS .
- If brake lining thickness is less than service limit, replace brake shoes as set. Check bearings on hub unit for smooth operation. Replace as necessary. See appropriate REAR article in SUSPENSION. Measure inside diameter of brake drum with inside vernier calipers.
- If the inside diameter of brake drum is more than service limit, replace brake drum. Check brake drum for scoring, grooves, and cracks.
