Rear Disc Brake Pads: Installation
- Install pad retainers. Apply Molykote M77 compound onto pad side of shim. Wipe excess grease off shim. Keep grease off discs and pads. Install brake pads and shims. Install inner pad with its wear indicator facing downward. If you are reusing pads, install in original position. Rotate caliper piston clockwise into cylinder, then align cutout in piston with tab on inner pad by turning piston back. See Fig 1 .
- Lubricate boot with rubber grease to avoid twisting. If boot is twisted, back it out and position properly. Install brake caliper. Install and torque caliper bolts to proper specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
. Install brake hose onto suspension arm with mounting bolt. After installation, check for leaks. Pump brake pedal several times to seat pads. Bleed brakes as necessary. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM
.NOTE: Engagement of brake may require a greater pedal stroke immediately after brake pads have been replaced as a set. Several applications of brake pedal will restore normal pedal stroke.
- Apply Dow Corning Molykote M77 grease to retainers on their mating surfaces against caliper bracket. Install pad retainers. Wipe excess grease off retainers. Contaminated brake discs and pads reduce stopping ability. Keep grease off discs and pads. Apply Dow Corning Molykote M77 grease to both sides of pad shims, and back of pads, and other areas indicated by arrows. See Fig 1 .
- Install brake pads and pad shims correctly. Install pads with wear indicators on inside. If you are reusing pads, always reinstall pads in their original positions. Rotate caliper piston clockwise into cylinder, then align the cutout in piston with tab on inner pad by turning piston back so caliper can be installed on pad. See Fig 2 . Lubricate the boot with rubber grease to avoid twisting piston boot. If piston boot is twisted, back it out so it is positioned properly.
- Install brake caliper and caliper bolts, and tighten bolts to specified torque. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
. Install brake hose. Press brake pedal several times to make sure brake works, then test drive.NOTE: Engagement of brake may require a greater pedal stroke immediately after brake pads have been replaced as a set. Several applications of brake pedal will restore normal pedal stroke. Check parking brake adjustment. See PARKING BRAKE under ADJUSTMENTS. Check for leaks at hose line joints or connections, and retighten.
Apply Dow Corning Molykote M77 grease to both sides of pad shims, back of pads and area indicated by arrows. See Fig 1 . Install brake pads and pad shims correctly. Install pads with wear indicators on inside. If you are reusing pads, reinstall in original position. Push in piston so that caliper will fit over pads. Check brake fluid. Brake fluid may overflow if reservoir is too full. Make sure piston boot is in position to prevent damaging it when installing caliper. See Fig 2 . Apply Dow Corning Molykote M77 grease to piston edges on their mating surfaces against inner pad shim. See Fig 2 . Install brake caliper and caliper bolts, and torque them to specified torque while holding the pin. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Be careful not to damage pin boots. Press brake pedal several times to make sure brakes work, then test-drive.
