Rear Brake Shoes: Installation

  1. Install parking brake lever and wave washer on pivot pin, and secure with a NEW U-clip. Install wave washer with its convex side facing out. Pinch the U-clip securely to prevent the pivot pin from coming out from brake shoe. Connect parking brake cable to parking brake lever. Clean threaded portions of clevis. Coat threads of clevis with grease. To shorten clevis, turn adjuster bolt.
  2. Hook self-adjuster spring to adjuster lever first, then to brake shoe. Install clevis and upper return spring, noting installation direction. Be careful not to damage wheel cylinder dust covers. Install lower return spring. Apply brake cylinder grease (P/N: 08733-B020E) or equivalent rubber grease to sliding surfaces. See Fig 1 .
  3. Apply Molykote 44MA to brake shoe ends and opposite edges of shoes. See Fig 2 . Wipe off any excess. DO NOT get grease on brake linings. Install brake shoes onto backing plate. Be careful not to damage wheel cylinder dust covers.
  4. Install tension pins and retainer springs. Hook upper return spring with tool. Install brake drum. If wheel cylinder has been removed, bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM  . Press brake pedal several times to set self-adjusting brake. Adjust parking brake. See PARKING BRAKE  under ADJUSTMENTS.

Connect parking brake cable to parking brake lever. Apply Molykote grease 44MA on sliding surfaces. See Fig 1 . Install parking brake lever on rear brake shoe, and secure it with pivot pin, wave washer, and NEW U-clip. Pinch U-clip securely to prevent it from coming off. Install self-adjuster and self-adjuster spring on brake shoe. Assemble brake shoes with clevis adjuster bolt, and upper return spring. Apply Molykote 44MA grease onto sliding surfaces. See Fig 2 . Wipe off any excess. DO NOT get grease on brake linings. Install shoe assembly on backing plate by fitting top of shoes onto wheel cylinder pistons and bottom of shoes onto locating plate. To complete installation, reverse removal steps.

  1. Install parking brake lever on rear brake shoe, and secure it with a new U-clip. Pinch U-clip securely to prevent it from coming off. Apply Molykote 44 MA to backside edges of brake shoes where shown. See Fig 1 . Wipe any excess off. Install self-adjuster and self-adjuster spring on front shoe. Connect parking brake cable to rear side of brake shoe, and assemble brake shoe with clevis adjuster bolt, and clevis. See Fig 2 .
  2. Install shoes on backing plate, fitting top of brake shoes on wheel cylinder pistons and bottom of brake shoes on locating plate. Install tension pins, and secure then with retainer springs by turning them while pushing each retainer spring. Install upper return spring and lower return spring. Install brake drum. Install rear wheels. If wheel cylinder has been removed, bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM  .
