Parking Brake Shoes: Inspection
See Fig 1 or Fig 2 for exploded view of parking brake drum. Check parking brake linings for cracking, glazing, wear, and contamination. Measure parking brake lining thickness. Measurement does not include brake shoe thickness. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS for parking brake drum standard and service limit. If parking brake lining thickness is less than service limit, replace all parking brake shoes as a set. Service limit is 0.04" (1 mm). Check bearings in hub unit for smooth operation. Measure inside of parking brake drum with inside vernier calipers. Service limit is 6.73" (171 mm). If inside diameter of parking brake drum is more than service limit, replace rear brake disc/drum.
