Low Fuel Indicator Light Test

  1. Check fuse No. 25 (7.5-amp) in driver's underdash fuse/relay box. Replace as necessary and retest system. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  2. Park vehicle on level ground. Remove fuel tank drain bolt and drain fuel into approved container. Using NEW washer, install fuel tank drain bolt. Add less than 1.1 gallon (4 liters) of fuel to tank. Turn ignition on. Low fuel indicator light should come on within 4 minutes. If low fuel indicator light comes on within 4 minutes, go to step  5 . If low fuel indicator light does not come on within 4 minutes, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove fuel tank access panel, located below rear seat cushion. Disconnect fuel tank sending unit 3-pin connector. Connect jumper wire between fuel tank sending unit connector terminals No. 1 (Black wire) and No. 3 (Green/Yellow wire). Turn ignition on. If low fuel indicator light comes on, replace fuel gauge sending unit. If low fuel indicator light does not come on, go to next step.
  4. Check for open in Green/Yellow wire between fuel gauge sending unit and fuel gauge. Check for blown low fuel indicator light bulb. Check for poor ground G552. Repair as necessary and retest system.
  5. Add 1.1 gallon (4 liters) of fuel to tank. If low fuel indicator light goes off within 4 minutes, low fuel indicator system is okay. If low fuel indicator light does not go out in 4 minutes, check for short to ground in Green/Yellow wire between fuel tank unit and gauge assembly. If problem exists, repair short to ground in Green/Yellow wire. If problem does not exist, replace fuel tank unit.
