Fuel Gauge Test

CAUTION: In the following tests, DO NOT apply battery voltage to wire terminals, or fuel gauge will be damaged. Turn ignition off before fuel gauge pointer reaches "F" mark, or fuel gauge will be damaged.
  1. Turn ignition off. Check fuse No. 25 (7.5-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Remove rear seat cushion. Remove fuel tank access panel. Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit 3-pin connector. Go to next step.
  2. Connect Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) positive lead to fuel gauge sending unit connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Black wire) and DVOM negative lead to fuel gauge sending unit connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire). Turn ignition on. If reading is 5-8 volts, go to next step. If reading is not 5-8 volts, check for open in Yellow/Black wire or Black wire. Check for poor ground (G552). See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  table. Repair as necessary.
    CAUTION: Turn ignition off before pointer reaches "F" on fuel gauge. Failure to do so may damage fuel gauge.
  3. Turn ignition off. Connect a jumper wire between fuel gauge sending unit connector terminals No. 1 (Black wire) and No. 2 (Yellow/Black wire). Turn ignition on. Fuel gauge pointer should start to move toward "F" mark on gauge. If fuel gauge pointer does not move, replace fuel gauge. If fuel gauge pointer moves, test fuel gauge sending unit.
