SRS Indicator Light Stays On
WARNING:
Whenever ignition is on, or has been turned off for less than 3 minutes, be careful not to bump SRS unit. Air bags could accidentally deploy and cause damage or injury.
- Before proceeding, See AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Erase DTC memory. See ERASING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE MEMORY under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition on. If indicator light stays on, go to next step. If light goes off after about 6 seconds, system is okay at this time. See TROUBLESHOOTING INTERMITTENT FAILURES under DIAGNOSTICS.
- Turn ignition off. Check fuse No. 23 (10-amp) in underdash fuse-relay box. See Figure . If fuse is blown, replace and erase DTC memory. See ERASING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE MEMORY under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition on and check that indicator light goes off after 6 seconds. If indicator light stays on, or if fuse is okay, go to next step.
- Disable air bags and seat belt tensioners. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect SRS main harness 18-pin connector from SRS unit. See Figure . Reconnect battery cables. Turn ignition on. Check for voltage between terminal No. 3 of SRS main harness 18-pin connector and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, replace SRS main harness.
- Connect SRS main harness 18-pin connector terminals No. 3 and 6 with jumper wire and backprobe adapters. See Figure . If SRS indicator light stays on, go to next step. If SRS indicator light goes off, check for poor contact at SRS main harness 18-pin connector. If connector is okay, replace SRS unit. See SRS UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Check fuse No. 23 (10-amp) in underdash fuse-relay box. See Figure . If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, turn ignition off. Disconnect dashboard wire harness 5-pin connector from gauge assembly. See Figure . Measure resistance between terminal No. 1 of dashboard wire harness 5-pin connector and ground. If resistance is less than one megohm, go to step 8 . If resistance is one megohm or greater, replace gauge assembly.
- Turn ignition off. Remove gauge assembly, but DO NOT disconnect dashboard wire harness 5-pin connector. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Connect dashboard wire harness 5-pin connector terminals No. 1 and 5 with a jumper wire. If SRS indicator light goes off, go to next step. If light stays on, replace SRS printed circuit board in gauge assembly.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect dashboard wire harness 5-pin connector from gauge assembly. See Figure . Measure resistance between terminal No. 1 of dashboard wire harness 5-pin connector and terminal No. 6 of SRS main harness 18-pin connector. See Figure . If resistance is one ohm or less, go to step 10 . If resistance is greater than one ohm, go to step 11 .
- Disconnect dashboard wire harness 24-pin connector from main wire harness. See Figure . Measure resistance between terminal No. 5 of dashboard wire harness 24-pin connector and ground. If resistance is less than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or greater, repair short to ground in dashboard wire harness.
- Disconnect SRS main harness 3-pin connector from main wire harness. See Figure . Measure resistance between terminal No. 1 of SRS main harness 3-pin connector and ground. If resistance is one megohm or greater, repair short to ground in main wire harness. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace SRS main harness.
- Reconnect SRS main harness 18-pin connector to SRS unit. See Figure . Connect voltmeter between terminal No. 1 of dashboard wire harness 5-pin connector and ground. See Figure . Turn ignition on, wait 6 seconds, then measure voltage. If voltage is 8.5 volts or greater, problem has corrected itself due to disconnecting and reconnecting connectors. Ensure all terminals make good contact, and recheck system. See TROUBLESHOOTING INTERMITTENT FAILURES under DIAGNOSTICS. If voltage is less than 8.5 volts, check SRS harness 18-pin connector. If connector is okay, substitute known-good SRS unit, and recheck. If problem persists, replace SRS main harness.
- Disconnect main wire harness 24-pin connector from dashboard wire harness. See Figure . Measure resistance between terminal No. 5 of main wire harness 24-pin connector and terminal No. 6 of SRS main harness 18-pin connector. See Figure . If resistance is greater than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is one ohm or less, repair open in Blue wire of dashboard wire harness.
- Disconnect SRS main harness 3-pin connector from main wire harness. See Figure . Measure resistance between terminal No. 1 of SRS main harness 3-pin connector and terminal No. 6 of SRS main harness 18-pin connector. See Figure . If resistance is one ohm or less, repair open in Blue wire of main wire harness. If resistance is greater than one ohm, replace SRS main harness.
