Disabling Air Bag System (MX-5 Miata)

NOTE: MX-5 Miata is equipped with a passenger air bag ON/OFF switch. Turning switch off is not a substitute for completely disabling the passenger air bag.
  1. Obtain radio anti-theft protection code from vehicle owner prior to servicing vehicle or deactivate radio anti-theft function before disconnecting vehicle battery.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. Wait at least ONE MINUTE for back-up power supply to be depleted.
  3. Remove steering column cover. Disconnect driver air bag clockspring connector from vehicle harness. See Figure.
  4. Remove glove box. Disconnect passenger air bag module connector from vehicle harness. See Figure.
