Diagnostic Procedure

- Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) System Check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II (OBD-II) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
- Perform Electric Throttle Control (ETC) System Check. See ELECTRIC THROTTLE CONTROL (ETC) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, review and record FAILURE RECORDS data. Operate vehicle within FAILURE RECORDS conditions noted. Monitor DTC information for DTC P1515 or P1516. If scan tool indicates that DTC P1515 or P1516 FAILED THIS IGNITION, go to next step. If scan tool display is not as specified, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Use scan tool to monitor TPS1 and TPS2 throttle angles. At closed throttle, TPS1 value should be between 8-10 percent and TPS2 value should be between 90-92 percent. TPS values should change smoothly as throttle valve is opened all the way. At WOT, TPS1 value should be between 90-92 percent, and TPS2 value should be between 8-10 percent. If TPS operation is as specified, go to step 8. If TPS operation is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect DC motor. Use DVOM to measure DC motor resistance. If resistance is between 0.3-100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step 7.
- Check for faulty circuit between DC motor and PCM. Repair as necessary. If no problem was found, go to step 8.
- Replace DC motor. Retest system. If problem is still present, go back to step 6.
- Disconnect TPS1 and TPS2. Observe scan tool values for both sensors. If both values are zero, go to next step. If scan tool display is not as specified, go to step 10.
- Connect test light between TPS harness connector 5-volt reference circuit and each TPS signal circuit. Scan tool display should read 5 volts as each sensor signal circuit is probed. If scan tool display is as specified, go to step 12. If scan tool display is not as specified, go to step 11.
- Check affected TPS for short to voltage on signal circuit, high resistance on ground circuit or poor ground circuit connection between PCM and TPS. Repair as necessary. If no problem was found, go to step 13.
- Check affected TPS for poor connection or high resistance on 5-volt reference circuit between PCM and TPS. Repair as necessary. If no problem was found, go to step 13.
- Replace affected TPS. Retest system.
- Replace and reprogram PCM. See PROGRAMMING .
