Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Isuzu Hombre. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II (OBD-II) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Install Tech 2 scan tool. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Move gear selector through all ranges. If scan tool indicates an invalid response in any range, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate any invalid responses, go to step  10.
  3. Compare scan tool indicated values with transmission range switch valid input combinations on scan tool display. See Fig 1. If all circuits indicate HI, go to next step. If any circuit does not indicate HI, go to step  5.

  4. Check for open or poor connection in transmission range switch ground circuit (Brown/White wire). Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  5. Move gear selector through all ranges. Note circuits whose values do not correspond with transmission range switch valid input combination scan tool display. See Fig 1. Disconnect transmission range switch harness connector. Using jumper wire connected to ground, contact circuit indicating incorrect value. See SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If suspect circuit switches from HI to LO value, go to step  8. If values does not switch as described, go to next step.
  6. Check suspect circuit for open or short to ground. Repair circuit as necessary. After repair is complete, go to step  10. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  7. Check for poor connections at PCM harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10. If connections are okay, go to next step.
  8. Replace transmission range switch. See HYDRA-MATIC 4L60-E ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. After range switch replacement, go to step  10.
  9. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using appropriate equipment. See PROGRAMMING . After PCM replacement, go to next step.
  10. Using scan tool, select CLEAR INFO or CLEAR DTCS function to clear DTCs. Start engine and allow it to idle. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions required for setting this DTC. Select SPECIFIC DTC function, then enter DTC P0705. If scan tool indicates TEST RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate TEST RAN AND PASSED, repeat step  2.
  11. If any other DTCs are set, diagnose DTCs as necessary. If no other DTCs are set, no problem is indicated at this time.
