Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II (OBD-II) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, store DTC information from PCM into scan tool. Clear DTCs from PCM. Reset fuel trim values. Start engine and run until normal operating temperature is reached. Monitor HO2S 2 voltage. If voltage is 400-473 mV, go to step 4. If voltage is not 400-473 mV, go to next step.
- DTC P0140 is intermittent. Go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If any other DTCs are present, diagnose DTCs as necessary.
- Disconnect HO2S 2 harness connector. Connect a jumper wire between ground and sensor high circuit (Purple/White wire) terminal on HO2S 2 harness connector. Connect a jumper wire between ground and sensor low circuit (Tan/White wire) terminal on HO2S 2 harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Monitor HO2S 2 voltage. If voltage is less than 20 mV, go to step 7. If voltage is 20 mV or greater, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Remove jumper wires. Disconnect PCM Black connector. Check continuity of Purple/White and Tan/White wires between terminals No. 23 and 24 on PCM harness connector and HO2S 2 harness connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist on either circuit, repair suspect open circuit and go to step 11.
- Inspect PCM harness connector. Ensure connection is clean and tight. Repair as needed and go to step 11. If connector is okay, replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using appropriate equipment. See PROGRAMMING . After replacing PCM, go to step 11.
- Turn ignition off. Remove jumper wires. Connect a test light between terminals "C" (Black wire) and "D" (Pink wire) on HO2S 2 connector. Turn ignition on. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition off. Connect HO2S connector. Disconnect PCM Black harness connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminal No. 21 (Tan wire) and 23 (Tan/White wire) on PCM harness connector. If resistance is less than 500 ohms, go to step 10. If resistance is 500 ohms or greater, repair suspect open circuit and go to step 11.
- Remove and check for blown OXYGEN fuse (20-amp) for HO2S 2 ignition feed circuit. If fuse is blown, repair circuit for short to ground. If fuse is okay, check continuity of Pink wire between HO2S harness connector and fuse block. Repair as needed. Inspect HO2S 2 ground circuit (Brown wire; Black wire after connector). After repairs, go to step 11.
- Inspect exhaust system for leaks. Typical leak will be within 12" of HO2S 2. Repair as needed. If no leaks exist, replace HO2S and go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select CLEAR INFO or CLEAR DTCS function to clear DTCs. Start engine and allow it to idle. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions required for setting this DTC. Select SPECIFIC DTC function, then enter DTC P0140. If scan tool indicates TEST RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate TEST RAN AND PASSED, repeat step 2.
- If any other DTCs are set, diagnose DTCs as necessary. If no other DTCs are set, no problem is indicated at this time.
