Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II (OBD-II) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Allow engine to cool to ambient temperature. Install Tech 2 scan tool. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, compare ECT sensor temperature reading to IAT sensor temperature sensor reading. If readings are similar, go to step 5. If readings are not similar, go to next step.
- Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Using DVOM, check ECT sensor resistance. See ECT TEMPERATURE-TO-RESISTANCE VALUES table under DTC P0117. If ECT resistance value is close to indicated in table, go to next step. If ECT resistance value is not as specified, go to step 15.
- Compare ECT sensor reading to value displayed by scan tool. If readings are similar, go to next step. If readings are not similar, go to step 15.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. If scan tool indicates ECT sensor temperature is less than -22°F (-30°C), go to next step. If scan tool indicates ECT sensor temperature is -22°F (-30°C) or greater, go to step 13.
- Connect a jumper wire between signal circuit (Yellow wire) and sensor ground circuit (Brown wire) terminals at ECT sensor harness connector. If scan tool value is greater than 266°F (130°C), go to next step. If scan tool value is less than 266°F (130°C), go to step 7.
- Disconnect and inspect ECT sensor and PCM connectors. Repair connectors as necessary. After repairs, go to step 16. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect jumper wire from sensor ground circuit (Brown wire) terminal at ECT sensor harness connector. Connect jumper wire to chassis ground. If scan tool value is greater than 266°F (130°C), go to step 11. If scan tool value is less than 266°F (130°C), go to step 8.
- Turn ignition off. Connect ECT harness connector. Start and operate engine for 5 minutes. Monitor ECT sensor data on scan tool. If temperature rises more than 5°F in minutes, go to next step. If temperature does not rise more than 5°F in minutes, go to step 15.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor and PCM harness connectors. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and ECT sensor ground circuit (Brown wire). If voltage is .5 volts or greater, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If voltage is less than .5 volts, go to step 13.
- Check for open ECT sensor ground circuit (Brown wire). Repair wiring as necessary. After repairs, go to step 16. If circuit is okay, go to step 14.
- Check for open ECT sensor signal circuit (Yellow wire). Repair wiring as necessary. After repairs, go to step 16. If circuit is okay, go to step 14.
- Check ECT sensor signal circuit (Yellow wire) for short to ground. If problem is found, repair Yellow wire and go to step 16. If no problem was found, go to next step.
- Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using appropriate equipment. See PROGRAMMING . After replacing PCM, go to step 16.
- Replace ECT sensor. After replacing sensor, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select CLEAR INFO or CLEAR DTCS function to clear DTCs. Start engine and allow it to idle. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions required for setting this DTC. Select SPECIFIC DTC function, then enter DTC P0125. If scan tool indicates TEST RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate TEST RAN AND PASSED, repeat step 2.
- If any other DTCs are set, diagnose DTCs as necessary. If no other DTCs are set, no problem is currently.
