Hombre 2.2L

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS, 2000 Isuzu Trooper, 2000 Isuzu Rodeo, 2000 Isuzu Hombre, and 2000 Isuzu Amigo. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Before performing following tests, check battery condition, engine cranking speed and fuel supply.
  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) System Check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II (OBD-II) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If DTC P0601, P0602, P1621, P1626, P1631, or P1632 is present, diagnose DTC(s). See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L HOMBRE article. If DTC(s) are not present, go to next step.
  3. Check PCM ground connection (Black/White wire) at engine block. If any problems were found, go to step  26. If no problems were found, go to next step.
  4. Check fuel pump and injector feed fuse ECM B (20-amp). Also check IGN fuse. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If fuses are okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, go to step  6.
  5. Check fuel level in tank and add fuel if necessary. If fuel level is okay, go to step  7. If fuel level was low and fuel needed to be added, go to step  38.
  6. Check for short to ground in fuel pump and injector feed circuit. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary. Replace defective ECM B fuse (20-amp) or IGN fuse. If vehicle starts, go to step  38. If vehicle does not start, go to step  37.
  7. Install scan tool. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Ensure throttle is closed. Scan TP sensor. TP sensor value should be less than one volt. If TP sensor value is as specified, go to next step. If TP sensor value is not as specified, go to DTC P0123: TP SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH VOLTAGE under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L - HOMBRE article.
  8. Using scan tool, monitor Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor values. Both values should be about the same if engine has not been run. If values are about the same, go to next step. If values are not about the same, go to DTC P0118: ECT SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH VOLTAGE under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L - HOMBRE article.
  9. Using scan tool, monitor MAP sensor readings while engine is cranking. If MAP sensor serial data was lost while cranking engine, go to step  12. If MAP sensor serial data was not lost while cranking engine, go to next step.
  10. Using scan tool, check to see if MAP sensor readings are over 4 volts. Crank engine while observing MAP sensor readings. If readings are over 4 volts, then change while cranking, go to next step. If MAP sensor readings are not as specified, go to MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR under ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
  11. Using scan tool, check Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor activity while cranking engine. If CKP ACTIVITY COUNTER increments while cranking, go to step  16. If CKP ACTIVITY COUNTER does not increment, go to step  13.
  12. Repair voltage loss to PCM from ignition switch. Check for damaged harness or poor connections. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After repairs, go to step  38.
  13. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Ignition Control Module (ICM) harness connector C-2 (6-pin). Turn ignition on. Connect test light between ground and ICM harness connector C-1 Pink wire. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  26.
  14. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ICM harness connector C-1. Check Black/White ground wire for open circuit or short to voltage. Repair as necessary, then go to step  38. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  15. Check for faulty circuit between ICM harness connector terminal "D" and PCM harness connector C-1 terminal No. 8 (Purple/White wire). Repair as necessary, then go to step  38. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  16. Reconnect both ICM connectors. Connect J 26792 spark tester to ignition wire No. 1 while leaving other three ignition wires connected. Crank engine and check for spark. Repeat test on other three ignition wires. If all four wires had spark, go to step  34. If all four wires did not have spark, go to next step.
  17. Disconnect ICM harness connector C-2 (6-pin). Using a DVOM, check resistance between ICM harness connector C-2 terminals "A" (Purple wire) and "E" (Yellow wire). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Resistance should be 700-1300 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to step  19. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  18. Remove CKP sensor. Using DVOM, measure resistance across CKP sensor terminals. Resistance should be 700-1300 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  24.
  19. Set DVOM to AC scale. While cranking engine, measure AC voltage between ICM harness connector C-2 terminals "A" (Purple wire) and "E" (Yellow wire). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Voltage reading should be greater than 200 millivolts (mV). If voltage reading is as specified, go to step  22. If voltage reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  20. Check for short to voltage on Purple/White wire between ICM harness connector C-2 terminal "D" and PCM harness connector C-1 terminal No. 8. Repair as necessary, then go to step  38. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  21. Check for short circuit to ground on either Purple or Yellow wire between ICM harness connector C-2 and CKP sensor harness connector. Repair as necessary, then go to step  38. If no problem was found, go to step  23.
  22. Connect test light to ICM harness connector C-2 terminal "D" (Purple/White wire). Turn ignition on. Touch remaining test light lead to ground and then to battery voltage. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Monitor CKP ACTIVITY COUNTER parameter on scan tool. If CKP ACTIVITY COUNTER increments as test light is touched to battery voltage, go to step  28. If CKP ACTIVITY COUNTER does not increment, go to step  25.
  23. Check for short circuit to voltage on either Purple or Yellow wire between ICM harness connector C-2 and CKP sensor harness connector. Repair as necessary, then go to step  38.
  24. Replace CKP sensor. After replacing CKP sensor, go to step  38.
  25. Check for open circuit or short to ground on Purple/White wire between ICM harness connector C-2 terminal "D" and PCM harness connector C-1 terminal No. 8. Repair as necessary, then go to step  38. If no problem was found, go to step  27.
  26. Repair circuit as necessary, then go to step  38.
  27. Reconnect ICM harness connectors. Connect test light between ground and ignition coil terminals on ICM. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Reconnect PCM harness connector. Observe test light while cranking engine. If test light flashes, go to step  33. If test light does not flash, go to next step.
  28. Check ICM harness connector for weak or poor connections. Repair as necessary, then go to step  38. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  29. Replace ICM. If engine starts and continues to run, go to step  38. If engine does not start and continue to run, go to next step.
  30. Check for faulty PCM connector or connection. If connector and connection are okay, go to step  32. If connector or connections are faulty, go to next step.
  31. Repair faulty PCM connector or connection. After repairs, go to step  38.
  32. Replace and reprogram PCM. Perform CKP SYSTEM VARIATION RELEARN PROCEDURE. See PROGRAMMING in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L - HOMBRE article. Go to step  38.
  33. Replace faulty ignition coil. After repairs, go to step  38.
  34. Install fuel pressure gauge in fuel rail inlet line. Turn ignition on and note fuel pressure after 2 seconds. Fuel pressure should be 41-47 psi (2.9-3.3 kg/cm2 ). If fuel pressure is as specified, go to step  36. If fuel pressure is not as specified, go to FUEL SYSTEM ELECTRICAL TEST  under FUEL SYSTEM.
  35. Disconnect all injector connectors. Connect injector test light to injectors No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 (one at a time). Crank engine and observe injector test light. Test light should flash on all tests. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, go to step  37.
  36. Check for fouled spark plugs. If spark plugs were fouled, replace as necessary, then go to step  38. If spark plugs were okay, check for water in fuel system. Check for basic engine mechanical problem (low compression). Ensure spark plugs are of resistor type. Check fuel pump operation with scan tool.
  37. Repair open in fuel pump and injector ignition feed circuit (Gray wire). After repairs, go to next step.
  38. Using scan tool, clear DTC(s). Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and continues to run, go to next step. If engine does not start, or starts but dies, go to step  2.
  39. Warm engine to operating temperature. Check for DTCs. If DTCs are present, go to DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L - HOMBRE article. If DTC(s) are not present, system is okay.
