Fuel Injector Circuit Diagnosis (Hombre 4.3L)

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) System Check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II (OBD-II) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect fuel injector harness connectors. Use a test light connected to ground to probe ignition feed circuit at each injector. Turn ignition on. If test light illuminates at all injector harness connectors, go to step  6. If test light does not illuminate at all injectors, go to next step.
  3. If test light illuminates for some injectors, go to step  5. If test light does not illuminate for some injectors, go to next step.
  4. Check ECM-1 (15-amp) fuse in underhood fuse/relay block. If fuse is blown, go to step  10. If fuse is not blown, go to step  11.
  5. Check for open circuits on those injectors that did not illuminate. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If any problems were found, go to step  12.
  6. Install fuel injector test light (noid light) into each fuel injector harness connector while cranking engine. If test light flashes at each injector harness connector, go to FUEL INJECTOR COIL test procedure under FUEL SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If test light does not flash at each injector harness connector, go to next step.
  7. If fuel injector test light (noid light) is on steady at any fuel injector while cranking, go to next step. If test light is not on steady at any fuel injector while engine is cranking, go to step  9.
  8. Install fuel injector test light (noid light) in the affected fuel injector harness connector. Turn ignition off. Disconnect VCM (PCM) Red harness connector. Turn ignition on. If test light is off, go to step  16. If test light is on, go to step  13.
  9. Check for open circuit between fuel injector and VCM. See appropriate wiring diagram in ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If a problem was found, go to step  12. If no problem was found, go to step  14.
  10. Repair short circuit to ground on fuel injector feed circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  12.
  11. Repair open or short circuit to ground on all injector feed circuits, then go to step  17.
  12. Repair affected circuit as necessary. Go to step  17.
  13. Repair short to ground between affected fuel injector and VCM. See appropriate wiring diagram in ENGINE PERFORMANCE WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  17.
  14. Check for poor or loose connections at VCM harness connector. If any problem was found, go to next step. If no problem was found, go to step  16.
  15. Repair poor or loose connections at VCM. Go to step  17.
  16. Replace and reprogram VCM. See PROGRAMMING in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 4.3L article.
  17. Use scan tool to clear all DTCs. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, go back to step  2.
  18. Allow engine to idle until it reaches normal operating temperature. Use scan tool to select DTC, then FAILED THIS IGNITION. If any undiagnosed DTCs are present, go to DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 4.3L article.
  19. Use scan tool to display CAPTURE INFO and REVIEW CAPTURE INFO functions. If any undiagnosed DTCs are present, go to DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 4.3L article.
