Wheel Bearing Preload

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2001 Isuzu Rodeo Sport, 2001 Isuzu Rodeo, 2001 Honda Passport, 2000 Isuzu Rodeo, and 2000 Isuzu Amigo. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For wheel bearing preload adjustment procedure on 4WD models, see AUTOMATIC LOCKING HUB  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove caliper, and wire aside. Remove hub cover and lock washer. See Fig 1 . Tighten hub nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 N.m) while rotating hub. Loosen hub nut, and then retighten until rotor has no free play.
  2. Attach spring scale to wheel stud. Tighten hub nut (while pulling on scale) until scale indicates preload of 4.4-5.5 lbs. (2-3 kg) for new bearing and new seal. If reusing old bearing with a new seal, tighten hub nut until scale indicates preload of 2.6-4.0 lbs. (1-2 kg). Install lock washer and hub cover.
