Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) System Check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Retrieve and record FREEZE FRAME and/or FAIL RECORDS data for each DTC set. Go to next step.
- If DTC P0446, P0452 and/or P0453 are set, diagnose applicable DTC. If indicated DTCs are not set, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Ensure Tech 2 scan tool is installed. Remove fuel cap. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read FUEL TANK PRESSURE. If scan tool displays zero in. H2 O, go to next step. If scan tool does not display zero in. H2 O, repair faulty fuel tank sensor circuit.
- Zero pressure and vacuum gauges on EVAP Diagnostic Station (J41413). Reinstall fuel cap. Read and record FAIL RECORDS data for DTC P0440. Clear DTCs. Using scan tool, command EVAP vent solenoid valve ON (closed). Connect EVAP diagnostic station to EVAP service port. Using EVAP diagnostic station, attempt to pressurize EVAP system to 5 in. H2 O. If specified pressure is achieved, go to next step. If specified pressure is not achieved, go to step 6.
- Maintain EVAP system pressure at 5 in. H2 O. Using scan tool, read FUEL TANK PRESSURE. If scan tool displays 5 IN H2 O, go to step 9. If scan tool does not display 5 IN H2 O, go to step 8.
- Disconnect fuel tank vapor and EVAP purge lines from EVAP canister. Plug fuel tank vapor line fitting at EVAP canister. Connect a hand-held vacuum pump to EVAP purge line fitting at EVAP canister. Ensure EVAP vent solenoid valve is still commanded ON (closed). Attempt to apply 5 in. Hg to EVAP canister. If vacuum is maintained as specified, go to step 12. If vacuum can not be maintained as specified, go to next step.
- Leave system configured as in previous step. Disconnect vent hose from vent valve and plug hose. Apply 5 in. Hg to system. If vacuum can be maintained, go to step 17. If vacuum cannot be maintained, go to step 11.
- Disconnect fuel tank vapor line from canister. Using EVAP diagnostic station, attempt to pressurize EVAP system to 5 in. H2 O. If specified pressure can be obtained and held, go to step 18. If specified pressure cannot be obtained or held, go to step 15.
- Disconnect purge line at canister. Connect vacuum gauge from EVAP diagnostic station to purge line. Start engine. Using scan tool, command solenoid purge valve to 100 percent. If indicated vacuum is 12 in. Hg or greater, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If indicated vacuum is less than specified, go to next step.
- Disconnect purge line from purge solenoid valve. Connect vacuum gauge from EVAP diagnostic station to purge solenoid valve. Start engine. Using scan tool, command solenoid purge valve to 100 percent. If indicated vacuum is 12 in. Hg or greater, go to step 14. If indicated vacuum is less than specified, go to step 16.
- Check vent hose for leak. Repair as necessary and go to step 19. If no problem was found, go to step 18.
- Check for missing or faulty fuel filler cap. Check for disconnected, leaking or damaged fuel tank vapor line or EVAP purge line. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 19. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- . Using scan tool, command EVAP vent solenoid valve ON (closed). With EVAP diagnostic station connected to EVAP service port, continuously attempt to pressurize EVAP system by leaving EVAP diagnostic station control knob in PRESSURIZE position. DO NOT permit pressure to exceed 15 in. H2 O. Using Ultrasonic Leak Detector (J41413), locate and repair EVAP system leak. It may be necessary to lower fuel tank to check connections at top of tank. After repair, go to step 19.
- Repair restriction in purge line. After repair, go to step 19.
- Repair restriction in fuel tank vapor line. After repair, go to step 19.
- Replace EVAP purge solenoid valve. After replacing purge solenoid valve, go to step 19.
- Replace EVAP vent solenoid valve. After replacing vent solenoid valve, go to step 19.
- Replace EVAP canister. After replacing canister, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, command EVAP vent solenoid valve ON (closed). Using EVAP diagnostic station pressurize EVAP system to 15 in. H2 O. Monitor EVAP diagnostic station pressure gauge. Turn EVAP diagnostic station rotary switch to HOLD position. If pressure decreases to less than 10 in. H2 O within 2 minutes, go to step 2. If pressure does not decrease as specified, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Start engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Using scan tool, select DTC, SPECIFIC function and enter DTC P0440. Operate vehicle within conditions required to set DTC. If scan tool displays RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display RAN AND PASSED, return to step 2.
- Using scan tool, select Read and Record INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, diagnose affected DTCs. If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
