Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) System Check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Retrieve and record FREEZE FRAME and/or FAIL RECORDS data for each DTC set. Go to next step.
  2. Start and operate engine for 2 minutes. Ensure engine is in closed loop and at normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, command AIR pump ON. If short term fuel trim changes more than 16 percent in 30 seconds, go to next step. If short term fuel trim does not change more than 16 percent in 30 seconds, go to step  4.
  3. DTC P0410 is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . Repair as needed. If any other DTCs are set, diagnose DTCs as necessary before proceeding. If no other DTCs are set, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, command AIR pump ON. If AIR pump is running, go to step  16. If AIR pump is not running, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect AIR pump harness connector. Inspect connector. Ensure connector is clean and tight. Repair as needed and go to step  26. If no problems were found, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Connect test light between ground and terminal "A" (Red wire) on AIR pump harness connector. Using scan tool, command AIR pump ON. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  8.
  7. Using test light connect to battery voltage, probe terminal "B" (Black wire) on AIR pump harness connector. If test illuminates, replace AIR pump and go to step  26. If test light does not illuminate, repair open Black wire and go to step  26.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect AIR pump relay. AIR pump relay is mounted in fuse block, next to battery. Inspect connector. Repair as needed and go to step  26. If no problems were found, go to next step.
  9. Check continuity of Red wire between AIR pump relay and pump. If continuity does not exist, repair as needed and go to step  26. If continuity exists, go to next step.
  10. Using test light, check for voltage at terminal 30 (battery supply voltage) on AIR relay socket. If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage does not exist, repair circuit as needed and go to step  26.
  11. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using test light, check for voltage at terminal 85 (ignition voltage) on AIR relay socket. If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage does not exist, repair circuit as needed and go to step  26.
  12. Connect test light between battery voltage and terminal 86 on AIR relay socket. Using scan tool, command AIR pump ON. If test light illuminates, replace AIR pump relay and go to step  26. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  13. Turn ignition off. Disconnect VCM Blue connector. Inspect connector for damaged or corroded terminals. Ensure connector is clean and tight. Repair as needed and go to step  26. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  14. Check continuity of Brown wire between terminal No. 14 on VCM Blue harness connector and terminal 86 on AIR pump relay socket. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Brown wire and go to step  26. If continuity does exist, go to next step.
  15. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Connect test light between ground and terminal 86 on AIR pump relay socket. If test light is illuminated, repair short to voltage in relay control circuit (Brown wire) and go to step  26. If test light is not illuminated, go to step  25.
  16. Disconnect AIR shutoff valve output hose at AIR shutoff valve. Start engine. Using scan tool, command AIR pump ON. If air flows from AIR shutoff valve, go to step  24. If air does not flow from AIR shutoff valve, go to next step.
  17. Turn ignition off. Disconnect AIR pump output hose at AIR shutoff valve. Turn on ignition, with engine off. Command AIR pump ON. If air flows from hose, go to next step. If air does not flow from hose, repair hose for obstruction and go to step  26.
  18. Start engine. Disconnect vacuum hose at AIR shutoff valve. Install vacuum gauge on AIR shutoff valve vacuum hose. Command AIR pump ON. If vacuum is 10 In. Hg or greater, replace AIR shutoff valve and go to step  26. If vacuum is less than 10 In. Hg, go to next step.
  19. Inspect vacuum hose between AIR solenoid and shutoff valve. Repair as needed and go to step  26. If hose is okay, go to next step.
  20. Remove vacuum connector at AIR solenoid. Install vacuum gauge on source hose coming from engine. Ensure engine is running. If vacuum is 10 In. Hg or greater, go to next step. If vacuum is less than 10 In. Hg, repair leak or restriction in source hose and go to step  26.
  21. Turn ignition off. Disconnect AIR solenoid harness connector. Inspect connector for damaged or corroded terminals. Ensure connector is clean and tight. Repair as needed and go to step  26. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  22. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Connect test light between ground and terminal "A" (Pink/Black wire) on AIR solenoid harness connector. Using scan tool, command AIR pump ON. If test light is illuminated, go to next step. If test light is not illuminated, repair open in Pink/Black wire) and go to step  26.
  23. Turn ignition off. Connect test light between battery voltage and terminal "A" (Black wire) on AIR solenoid harness connector. If test light is illuminated, replace AIR solenoid and go to step  26. If test light is not illuminated, repair open Black wire and go to step  26.
  24. Inspect AIR shutoff valve, hoses, check valves, fittings, AIR system pipes and exhaust manifolds for leaks or restrictions. Repair as needed and go to step  26. If no problems were found, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  25. Replace VCM. Program replacement VCM. See PROGRAMMING .
  26. Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter DTC P0405. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool did not indicate that this test RAN AND PASSED, repeat step  2.
  27. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTC(s) are displayed, go to applicable DTC test.
